Well, I'm still working on it.

Actually, I'm finishing up an ORDER today. And a destruction test knife....

Seems I got my heat treatment down reasonably well....well, often enough I know when I hit it.

Kinfe number 5 is a "patch hiker" design I'm working on. a thin lightweight blade for hiking and camping in "no trace" settings. So it ain't a gonna chop wood! I use a 'hawk for that, anyway.

This lady just got back from a family run south to see ailing great grandparents and camp/hike on the way back north, along the eastern Sierra. After a few kindling sticks and meals, here it is:

I don't like quite how far up the blade I brought the handle, it needs to back down about 1/8 to 1/4 inch. And I could start using something besides red oak for handles (as soon as the osage orange gets in!). But it's a good knife, holds an edge and is pretty flexible. Works as a rough and ready filet and paring knife as well and general camp knife. Really lightweight, too. Oh, that's about a 3.25 inch blade with a scandi grind out of L6

It's *really* comfortable to hold. The top bit where it comes out so far should be backed down a wee bit for sharpening, but it's a comfy grip on a thin blade.

Goo form and function, and nothing wrong with red oak. I recently sent some wood off for stabilizing and some of it was figured red oak, turned out surprisingly well. I love the shape of the handle, it should make a very nice light duty all around knife.

the blade design is very very loosely based on a northwest patch knife style. I sized up some and then designed the handle with some of my more comfoetable hand carpentry tools in mind- and added a bit for thumb pressure since it is a pretty thin blade. I am going to refine a bit and try making more out of 3/32 danssaw stock.

thanks for the feedback!

the valley and blue oak out here in cali can be gorgeuous. cheap red oak is cheap, but hey- my edc puukka is just birch.... and I have that peach I cut down curing, couple good burls in there.....
