knife nuts that dont sharpen

I try to practice sharpening as much as I can, at some point I expect the backyard shovel to be able to shave hair. :D
Oh man, I've also sharpened some stuff that didn't really need sharpening lol!

i sharpened a paperclip down to paper cutting sharp on a bet once, took way more time than the cup of coffee i won was worth

I could barely sharpen a pencil, much less a good edge on knife. Got a KME now, and I'm kinda proud of what I can do!

I have always enjoyed sharpening as much as owning and using. Natural bench stone when I was a little guy, DMT diamond benchstones when I started accumulating nicer knives, and a couple of years ago a Wicked Edge Pro Pack II and StropMan strops. I have been really enjoying through my collection, seeing how different steels react.

Not to thread hijack but since there are a lot of us that have posted that we do not sharpen can anyone recommend a sharping system and resources to learn?

Why did you sharpen a ring to what looks like a pretty good apple peeler?

I am going to sharpen the shovel, hoe, spade, and w/e else can benefit from an edge. Never done it before, but the efficiency gains is enough to pique my interest.
(It probably doesn't do much for dirt, but how cool would it be to be able to chop roots and prune trees with any tool in the shed?)

I thought he was talking about his fingernails...

Did it cuz I always wanted to. I like the fact that I have a bevel on my ring. Its like even when I'm somewhere where people are knife-a-phobes I can feel happy inside still.

Oh man, that hurts but damn, when ur right your right! Lol.

:D

i think the answer to "why did he do that " is "why not?"

Trust me, if I gave myself a reason I would too. But at this point I ... just don't know why? Is it one of those things where there isn't a why?

Edit: Just saw the comment within my quote. Did it cuz I always wanted to. Like the fact that I have a bevel on my ring. Its like even when I'm somewhere where people are knife-a-phobes I can feel happy inside still.
Good for you bud! :p

I met an ex coworker today and was looking at his knives that his job sold i was checking out the benchmade 300 axis flipper, and asked if i could compare with my knife. anyway i took it out and he went oh cool a ZT can i see that? so i showed it to him, and he asked if he had shown me his strider, which made my ears perk up. i noticed while playing with it that he had never sharpened it and it was quite dull then he said he had to find a guy to sharpen it. so i told him to take my number and bring them to me and i'll get them sharp free of charge.

anyway has anyone else ever met a person with high quality tastes but doesn't do their own sharpening? I found it a bit strange.

I know quite a few chefs who give their rolls over to local cutlers instead of sharpening on their only day off.

I have a close friend with a very large and expensive knife collection. He carries a $50 Kershaw that is as dull as a butter knife. He has absolutely no idea how to sharpen a knife, nor does he care to learn.

That cheap knife he carries is the only one he owns that has ever left the box.

Very strange to me, I carry and use all my knives, and while I am no expert I can get a hair shaving edge on just about any blade.

Until recently I was not good at sharpening. I finally bought the right equipment to reprofile and sharpen my knives and now I rarely carry one that isn't sharp.

I have numerous friends that carry knives and NONE of them are even at working edge sharpness.. I got lucky myself and was raised by a trapper.( my old man keeps his little skinners SHARP) He shaved a little patch of hair off his arm when I was in elementary school, been sharpening since. I too have the hairless legs below the knees, the girlfriend gives me a funny look every know and then

Well, I find sharpening to be very calming, almost meditative. And for me there is much satisfaction in knowing exactly how sharp I can get a blade to be.
I do find it surprising that some don't know how, and even more surprising that some don't even care to. I was taught, and continue to think, it is a skillset that everyone who owns knives should have.
A dull knife is just sad..

I despise sharpening. I'll do it if necessary, but I'd prefer to just pay someone else to do the job.
