Knife Oil: A question

Dolphin jaw oil (specifically from the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin) is the only oil that touches these pivots and watches.

Y'all common folk just dont understand 😔
That was in the 90's man.

Much more sustainable "dolphin free" jaw oils are available now.

So, is multi-vis synthetic a bad idea then?

Why and how?
Lubrication wise I'm sure the multi-vis oil will work just fine. But so does food safe mineral oil. Multi-vis motor oil is going to smell and taste like motor oil. So if you use it on you knife. The knife may smell like motor oil. Your pocket may smell like motor oil, and If you cut something you eat it might taste like motor oil. A food safe mineral oil will lubricate the knife just as well, and won't taste or smell bad. If you don't care about the smell and possible food contamination, use multi-vis motor oil.

O.B.

All good points.

My bottle of Buck knife oil smells a bit like 3-in-one oil.

What about grease? I have heard that a CRK Sebenza needs a thicker lube.

Sebenzas ship with a grease that CRK recommends. Many have stated there are better greases available over the one that ships with the knife. Check the CRK forum as it's been discussed.

As an auto mechanic, I often use clean motor oil to lube my pivots, it works well. To those that act like motor oil is the devil, I say they need to quit being so hyper critical and sensitive. I’m exposed to it daily in quantities far greater than most will contact in a lifetime and it’s not what’s gonna do me in, women, taxes, and age will.

I actually prefer grease for the more hydraulic feel of the action, but some pivots like slip joints only see oil.

At home I use whatever is handy as well, mineral oil, Lucas gun oil, hoppes gun oil, but my favorite is probably the kleen bore gun oil, it’s quite a bit more viscous than the others and smells of nostalgia.

It’s a knife, don’t overthink it.
There aren’t great shearing forces, dramatic temperatures, or hundreds of thousands of cycles like other machines face. Any petrol based lubricant will do a fine job.

I don't think anyone's made the claim that motor oil is the devil, or even remotely close to that.
There are other equally serviceable options, however, and that includes legitimately food grade lubricants.
