Recommendation? Knife oil coating

Baby oil is supposedly mineral oil with a little fragrance.

John.
The fragrance may negate the food safe quality I would just get standard mineral oil from the drug store. I also think there is more in baby oil or it is something very different because they have a very different texture on the hands.

Is the oil that comes with electric hair trimmers mineral oil.

I use ZX1 oil on moving parts that get hot as it bonds to the metal reducing friction and reducing wear.

Nope. Baby oil is mineral oil with fragrance. So is fancy schmancy choji oil for your katanas.

You may be correct about the fragrance negating the food safe quality.

I only use Camilla oil on my carbon steel.
It will help form a patina and keep your carbon in good shape.

P.S. its also food safe

Been using what butchers use on their carbon steel knives - mineral oil.

I was just reading on here the other day that you should wash you knife in cold water as hot water can damage the blade edge, I did not know 40c water cold weaken steel.

John.

I never noticed that happening. Anything is possible but I rinse in hot water for seconds and dry it immediately. Then I use it. YMMV.

That's because it doesn't happen. Heck, esee even recommends washing in hot soapy water. This whole hot tap water damaging tempered steel is a misconception we need to not spread and put to bed right now. It is 100% fiction.

Any oil made from food can rot. I would not use canola oil. Mineral oil or one of the many food safe oils will be the best bet.

Being diplomatic with John Stubly doesn't mean I agree with what he said.

Mineral oil is a petroleum product that works too. It has been mentioned a few times and felt it unnecessary to recommend it again.

Canola oil has yet to go rancid on the steels I use it on. I suppose it is possible though.

Some out right lies need to be shut down before more new people start giving them credit and continue to spread them. Diplomacy has nothing to do with it.

Diplomacy has everything to do with my statement. I don't speak for others. It's foolish AND off topic. Take care.

Howard Cutting Board Oil, Norton Honing Oil, Ikea SKYDD wood treatment oil - all are good food-grade mineral oils. There is of course, Mineral Oil USP available from your local pharmacy. I find the USP version to be a little more viscous than the others mentioned. I usually use the Norton product for oiling carbon steel knife blades.

I think Rennaisance Wax would be a good alternative to oil.
Wax iirc does not digest otherwise its not harmful. But not idea for food prep because of that. But it's not gonna kill anyone if small quantities of wax gets consumed.

You also should not consume lots of mineral oil. As that's a bit unsafe as well.

Considering Mineral Oil is taken as a laxative though I highly doubt anyone's blades have enough on them to be any danger.
