I am looking into purchasing the Rat Cutlery Izula, but i have heard that the steel they use (1095) needs to be taken care of. What kind of oil should i get to make sure it stays in mint condition? Also, if i needs to e sharpened, what kind of stone would be best for it? Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Rem Oil or mineral oil works for me.
I hope you don't keep it to mint...just use it!

RATs are not meant to be kept "mint". They are made to be used hard. Any oil will work to prevent rust on the blade when you will not use it for awhile. If you plan on using it for food cutting, then I would suggest Mineral Oil which is non-toxic to humans.

Forehead grease works well.

I often just wipe the rust off onto the next thing I cut as I run the edge through it.:D

Welcome to the forum!

Sewing machine oil or gun oil. If I need some, I go to whatever store is closest and buy whichever is cheapest. They work exactly the same.

Any gun oil will work, but I prefer Breakfree CLP.

Shoot cartridge black powder in Cowboy Action Shooting, and over the years, I have found Breakfree CLP to be one of the best oils to prevent rust and corrosion.

i've been using rem oil mostly because i haven't had a chance to go out and buy the mineral oil. any one you'd prefer over the other? or in this case, does anything work.

I just put a drop of militec-1 on a paper towel and wipe the edge its not the right oil but it works pretty well

If you're stropping the compound should have enough wax to keep it good for day to day use, you just shouldn't let the knife lie around in wet places for a long time.
When I switch my Izulas, I sharpen the one that goes to the drawer, and then I treat the edge with some beeswax. Haven't had any problems so far.

Just use lipbalm. You're gonna have many more uses for it in the woods anyway, so why bring a can of whatever?!

I actually found a good sized bottle of MO at Ikea that cost $ 4.00. My wife dragged me and the kids there, as usual, I had knives on the brain and found something there I could use. I suspect any phamacy will carry MO as well.

I use 3in1 honing oil. With as light a coating as I put on the blade, it's not going to hurt me. My poop comes out a little easier, but that's actually a plus in my book. lol Everytime I sharpen the knife, I use 3in1 anyways, so instead of washing it off and then applying some food safe mineral oil or something like that, I'll just apply a light coating of the 3in1. Works like a champ. I'll usually just wipe the blade on something once or twice before I start eating with it. Any oil that's left just help it cut my food better.
