Knife on a plane...

I have an extension to this question, for the sake of not having to start a new thread. If I am flying international (between U.S. and Poland), and I have a layover in another country like - say - UK for example, if the knife violates UK law but not Polish law, will I still get taken down and branded a terrorist for that? Basically, can I bring a liner-locking folder in my checked bags (which is allowed in the U.S. and Poland) if I have a layover in sheeple country?

This would be a good reason to buy a new knife. Once you get to Oregon. buy a new knife. When it's time to go home ship your new knife home. $2.45 USPS anything under a pound.

The risk is that if you have a flight delay, and have to take position of the illegal knife in the UK. Leave it at home.

If you really must take the knives, and you have concerns about theft~loss, might I suggest you ship them there ahead of time vis post. As for Striders point on the police being the only ones capable of confiscating unauthorized items,my Leatherman was confiscated on a domestic flight one year after 9/11 and it was most certainly a TSA/security agent(s) that did the confiscating. I had simply tossed it into my dopp kit from force of habit, never giving it a second thought.
That was many years ago and most likely many rules have changed since then.

If they did confiscate your Leatherman it was not exactly in accordance to policy. Shocker! Or, it may be a matter of your perception. If a TSA agent finds the prohibited item at the checkpoint they should give you the option to either surrender the item or exit the sterile area with the item. If it was not explained to you that way then I'm not really surprised. That is/was the policy but under informed, under educated or whatever employees either don't take the time to explain the rules or don't know it themselves. If, on the other hand, you made it past the checkpoint into the sterile area and were subject to a gate screening then all bets are off. That item would be confiscated.

In checked bags on planes, I have had no problems, but don't try to take any knife or multi tool on a cruise ship! I had a Leatherman and a small folder in my bags for a Carnival cruise once, and you would have thought it was an AK the way they reacted. They apparently x-ray the bags going in the hold, and when I checked in on the gangway, I kid you not, alarm bells and lights went off and three guards escorted me back to the dock to meet with a local police officer, who wisely told them it wasn't anything he cared about. They made me get rid of them before I could get on board. I guess they thought I could hijack the ship with a pocket knife! I used the steak knife they gave me an hour later.
