Knife on Battlestar Galactica

I can't remember looking forward to a TV show this much since... well -- ever! I'm giddy.

The quality of the story, the invoking of spiritual and sexual themes, the quality of the characters, the dark atmospheric quality of galactica, the continual suspense and mystery of the whole program, etc.

I have to say I am a fan of classic startrek and TNG (the newer ones having taken a huge nose-dive in quality), but this show tops just about anything I've seen. There is a genius involved somewhere in the production.

Galatica clearly raises the bar for sci-fi television. I like that it is written primarily for adults. We don't see any dumb cutesy kids running around with their daggets on this one. Nor, are we bombarded with a constant stream of techno-babel, or wierd alien tales; as we were on Star Trek, Babylon 5, and other shows. It is just a simple survival story with plenty of measured drama and suspense.

Like 24, it is written to feel like a mini-series rather then a situtation piece. But, unlike 24 it refuses to decend into a repeditive stupidity of canned cliches. This is a real prime time soap opera with an emphasis on character development. There are no doomed red shirted security men on this one, nor, a million paper thin bad guys rolling off a printing mill just to shoot up the set, and add to the body count. Even the mass produced chrome plated, toaster-like Cylon soldier bots, have more personality and character development then the average movie hero in an action film.

It has been a long time since we have been treated to good drama, and we can all hope that this one has a run as long as Dallas.

I watched again the last one ...(where the blonde turns up and is seen by everyone)

When they put the guy in the ship's jail, I noticed how old and used and beat-up the bars of the jail cell were...

This was just so different than the Star Trek jail cells with the clean floors and electirc walls for cell bars....

BattleStar has a look of "real-ness" to it. The old looking cell bars with their scratched paint give the feel that this "IS" a jail.

not2sharp- Man, you have just hit the nail on the head with a couple of points!

I started out the first season likeing 24, but by the time Jack was rescuing his family on that deserted farm I was rooting for the bad guys to put them out of thier misery! I stopped watching the show, it was getting too stupid in a very repetetive way.

The comment about the red shirts made me laugh. You're right, if there was a red shirt around you did not need three guesses as to who was going to get zapped.

DaQo'tah Forge- The real nitty gritty and well used look of things is one of the great points of the show, a sence of realisim. Remember the ship is an old ship, and has been in service a long time. In the first episode a point was made that they had never retrofitted it with the new computers, luckly as it turned out.

But I'm dying to know the meaning of the blond making her appearence to everyone, not just Baltars tormented mind. The scene where she makes her appearence and the 2nd in command tells Baltar yes they see her, she's standing right next to him was priceless. James Callis is a very good actor.

They replay each show a few times during the week on Sci-fi , and I got to watch the part where Baltar breaks into the computer room and tries to break the computer...

It's a very funny bit of acting....I loved the moment when he pulls the plug on one computer after trying all kinds of things to break the computer, and he thinks he got it, then looks and finds out he pulled the plug on the Wrong computer!

If there is any reason beyond what took place in that episode, it's not revealed in the first season.

Yes, James Callis is a great actor. That particular scene had me in stitches :D

I couldnt agree more! I am not a big TV kinda guy , I watch History channel when I can , but BG is awesome , has me looking forward to it each week. :D
I grew up with all the sci fi of the 70's and 80's , none of those or any show out now can even come close to the new BG. imho :D

This last episode of BattleStar was...".Disturbing"

It was very disturbing on many levels. But one thing for sure, it was extremely well written.
With the beating of the Cylon prisoner I could not help but be reminded of current events in the news. Thats what made the appearance of the Madam President all the more fascinating.

When she shows up, we have already understood that the Cylons were able to appear to her in her dreams somehow. When she interupts StarBuck abusing the prisoner I sure thought for a moment that the show would slip back down into the tried and true story line, where the good cop rushes in to save the life of the poor prisoner who was suffering at the hands of the bad cops.

BUT.....the writers of this BattleStar had vastly different ideas on how to bring things to an end!

There would be no normal "The good guys save the day" type ending here!

The president stops StarBuck from killing the Cylon, only to toss him out an open air lock!....Beautyfull!,,,Totally unexpected... and Brutal.

I had no idea the President would do this to the Cylon given the secret he whispered to her a moment before this. and given that the President had just talked about peace with the Cylons...

Also, the shows last parting shot of the President and the Commander looking at each other...this sets up a great confrontation for later.

Hey there DaQo-

I agree the show was disturbing from that point, but I'm aback over Boomer talking Baltar into testing her for being a cylon, then the test comes out negative after first having a red board. And of course the blond is looking over his shoulder all the while and seems hostile to the cylon boomer.

Ya got to hand it to the show- It keeps your mind going. No veging out while you watch this show.

I think James Callis deserves some sort of recognition for great suporting actor in a TV series.

And just what did the cylon whisper to Madam Prez???

He whispered that Adama was a Cylon. The prez then ordered to dump him out of the airlock. I agree that it was disturbing to watch the Cylon get tortured, but the episode was very well written. At the end we see Starbuck say a prayer to the gods to take the Cylon's soul into their protection. Hey, now that Dr. Baltar knows Boomer is a Cylon, I wonder what his next move will be?

Whatever it is, he best be real careful! I think that blonde is a jellous type

I have no idea what will happen next!

I can see a few points that are going to be trouble...

If...
If Baltar knows for sure that Boomer is a Cylon, yet tells no one,,,and has this secret...
and...

If Baltar now is in a position where no one can question his judgements....
and..i.

If Adama is believed by the President now to be a Cylon, then Baltar could fake the proof very easly...

Baltar might be in a position to get rid of anyone who is a danger to him.

But the really odd part in the whole story is the use of GOD....In almost every plot point we are dealing with some sort of GOD connection...so strange the way the humans believe in many gods,,,and the Cylons believe in only one God.

AND...I dont have any idea of the Cylon "plan"...I have no idea what the blonde is up to and how Boomer (s) fits into anything yet....

Last night's BattleStar was perhaps the best TV Sci-Fi show ever made!

It had it all. A great mystery, a great battle among the stars, and great story from top to bottom.

I loved every moment I even stayed up until 1:00 when it came on again to watch it one more time. I cant believe how great the writing is, how the story threads are being woven with such skill. Think of it, we are weeks into the Cylon plot and I still have no idea what they are planning.

I even loved the music that went along with the story this week.
The music added so much to the tone, the feel of the personal moments of victory on the warriors. I found the interaction of the Commander and his son to be very interesting, I found the interaction between the Doctor and the Blonde to this time show more of the Blondie motovation. Clearly she has been working to get the Doc to believe that he is the hand of God.

The President is becoming part of a prophecy about the future with her visions of snakes. Starbuck has taken well to her position as Leader of the attack. I loved the battle shots of the ships fighting in space and near the moon. I loved the way the ships moved.

When this night's episode was over I felt like I had witnessed a truly Great event in TV history. I felt a bit tired from watching the action, I loved the plot twists...

I cant wait for next week!

Question for those who watch the series:

Did anyone catch a glimpse of the folder used by Starbuck to cut through the Cylon in the latest episode? It's the scene where she's crashed on the planet, finds the downed Cylon Raider, opens it's bottom hatch and cuts through it's flesh to get inside it. Has anyone been able to ID the folder?

I know this question is ancient, but I came across it while looking for the knife from “razor”. The knife Starbucks uses is a cheap Chinese made mutitool, you used to be able to get them in the water bottle survival kits from places like cabalas. I had one when I was first starting out in boy scouts.

it was a pain to actually find a photo of it, but I hope this helps someone in the future
