My first primitive skills book was 'Naked into the Wilderness' which sort of takes that approach. Basically, (VERY basically...a lot of assumptions here) with enough knowledge, a knife, some type of cordage, and sufficient time to apply your knowledge before you, for example, freeze to death, it's possible to get by quite nicely.

I'd rank the importance of everything as:
1) Knowledge
2) A good knife
3) Some type of cordage

2 and 3 can be obained by using #1, but having them already is a big help.

Given these three things, you can make fire, shelter, find food, and depending on the situation, get water.

In a survival situation, your first priority is shelter. In the list of needs, fire is listed as part of the shelter need, but is not always necessary, depending on climate, resources, and the length of time you are lost/stranded.

So build your shelter first. You may not even need a knife or cordage to accomplish this. Make sure your shelter is secure and will meet your needs, which means it should protect you from weather and hypothermia. After your shelter is built, work at building a fire.

Now that you can survive the night without freezing to death, you need water. Without it you'll be gone in about 3 days.

Once you have secured water, you can set about finding food, and that's where your knife comes in. Gather enough food to supply maybe two or three meals, if possible, then begin making snares (cordage). The snares will work for you while you are busy with other matters.

Remember the Nez Perce "rule of threes." Try to locate at least three sources for each of your needs: firewood, water, food, medicines, etc. This will give you a strong base for survival.

As far as a knife goes, who knows what the perfect knife would be? You would find yourself wanting to use steel in so many different ways that you would constantly wish you had a different knife, regardless of which one you had.

coyotlviejo, you are very knowledgeable! Your observations are right on. In that situation, I'd build a shelter first, then concentrate on fire. Fire is so important in any situation. It not only provides warmth, and a means of cooking, but others too. Fire harden tools in it, purify water, signaling, keep away insects, and of course, raises the spirits. Next in line would be finding water. You definitely want to practice the skills before you need them. Of course, if you practice enough, and love the woods as I do, you probably won't "need" them. It becomes a way of living.

tknife-- thanks for the compliment. As a teenager I was active on our local Search & Rescue team. They provided excellent training for us budding outdoorsmen. We even did survival training to become certified for the state disaster response team. We were supposed to become kind of an elite team that could be relied upon to work in the toughest and most primitive condtions.

I didn't make the grade, but the training was good.
