knife or phone?

I only recently started carrying quality knives and they're a joy to use. But often in today's world, and my job even, a cell phone is expected. Pay phone's just don't really exist anymore. Not at the convenience they once were. Not to mention the massive amount of things that today's smart phone's are capable of. They organize your day, keep you in touch with the world beyond phone calls, such as email and internet. I'm posting this from my htc incredible. So I find it hard to get by with out my phone

That said, I feel naked with out my knife. While my phone is almost always in my hand, my knife is always in my pocket. I would hope I didn't have to choose, but if forced I'd have to pick the phone

I have a Spyderco Bug attached to a short lanyard on my phone. Grab the phone, knife comes with it.

To address the original question, I would rather have my knife than cell phone. I've been carrying a knife for many years before cell phones were around. Old habits are had to break.

I will have to remember not to have any knives with me when have jury duty nest week. I will feel naked.

Above and beyond, a knife.

I carried a knife way before anyone even thought about cell phones. Right now, my job requires me to carry a phone but on the day I retire I will not carry a cell phone again.

I feel that I could get by without either for a day (with a certain degree of discomfort). But on my priority list, my phone would rate higher.

I've got a spare knife in my car and a few at work, but just this morning I had to get out of the car and go back upstairs to get my cell phone which was still on the counter. Without my iPhone I'd be too bored to make it through the day.

Knife, and by a wide margine.

My cell phone doesn't even get a signal in the valley I live in, and I don't leave the valley but 2 or 3 days a week.
I have it set so I can't get a text, and only use it a few times a week for calls only. I'm thinking of getting rid of it all together.

Well, I still work for a living, so I use a knife about a hundred times more than a phone. That said, I'm on call for emergencies, so I have to have the phone, and I've had to go back home for it a few times. I've never had to go back after a knife. Oh, wait, that may be because I haven't gotten out the house without a knife in thirty years.

The knife, forget about the phone as its a convenience/inconvenience, but a knife is a neccessity. We survived thousands of years without phones, but we could not have without our knives.

Depends what I think I'll be doing that day. One job I have to keep my knife in a back pack, where as my cell is used frequently. But if I'm working the other job or bumming around on the weekends I've definitely left my cell phone at home before, but never a knife.

I can do what I need to in a day of work without my cell phone as it doesn't help get the job done. But What am I gonna do, gnaw through thick nylon rope and clothesline? :D

knife for me , i can live without cell phone few days , I do have smart phone with gps, internet ,and all that crap and its very helpful , but knife is always with me . ... best thing to have both :)

As much as I despise telephones, I think I'd feel more uncomfortable without my phone than my knife.

Like has been said, the phone and knife are both single use items. I don't use my phone for internet apps or texting, so it's only for calls. But there are certain situations where a knife is of absolutely no use and a phone may save your life.

If you go off the road on a deserted road late at night, the knife may cut you out of a seat belt, but the phone is going to get police, fire and ambulance to you a lot quicker than you could get it without the phone.

I've been going knifeless for about the last week because I sprained my right elbow. The only knife I have that is truly ambidextrous is my BM710, and it's just too much to carry in my left pocket with my wallet and phone. As much as I miss having the knife, I figured it was the least useful item in my current condition... can't cut too much with just one hand and I'm pretty useless left handed, so I'd rather not have an extremely sharp knife in my left hand. Once my elbow is back to normal, I'll be dropping my Queen congress back in my pocket... an absolutely useless knife with just one hand.

I made it through my first 40 years or so without a cell phone and though there was probably a short period before I started carrying knives, I don't remember it. My knife never wakes me up in the middle of the night and makes me log on and do work.

Easy choice for me - knife any time and every time.

I use my phone for one thing: to make phone calls.

I use my knife for one thing: to cut things.

Considering they are both single use items, which do I value more? Daily use, I would probably miss the knife more. Not having the phone is a bit of a stress reliever because no one is calling. :)

I totally agree, if I had my phone, I could call my wife to have her bring me my knife! :D

Knife for me. I havn't bothered getting one of those fancy do everything phones, so I guess I don't know what I'm missing. :) But I think on average my phone gets used maybe once a week, where as my knife gets used many many times a day.

That' s exactly how I feel about this. My phone is several years old and all I really use it for is making a call, which is pretty rare since I usually only phone people when I' m at home anyway and can use my regular telephone.

I' d probably never leave home without atleast 2 knives(yes, 2:D), the phone can stay home from time to time even though it is important when I' m hiking or somewhere else outdoors.

hardheart, my wife & I have got into the habit of putting the car key ring, cell phone, charger, flashlight, & pocket knife in our foyer. When we leave, we grab it on the way out, & on the way in she puts the phone back on the charger & everything else goes there as well. Being we both survived the 60's with a little gray matter intact, this is the only way we can insure we get everything we need when we leave. Maybe it will work for you too . . . :)
Be safe.

That's funny, I gotta try that, usually I remember everything but I have at times ran out without the phone, there's always a knife somewhere within' reach so forgettin' that is near impossible.

The cell phone to me is just an extension of my home phone, all I use it for is to call and get called, no textin' or web surfin', just for callin's all.

I always have a phone, a knife, and a couple of multitools with me. If I have to choose, I will keep my smartphone. In day to day activities it is much, much more useful than a knife, especially since it's connected to the Internet. A knife is useful, but in urban life there are few things you can't do with your hands alone, since most packaged goods have been designed so people can open them with their bare hands.

Interesting question you have asked. Personally I have carried a knife everyday for many, many years, not so with the cellphone.

I have to admit, since I got a smart phone I am rarely without it, but I'm never without a knife. I guess that means the knife wins. :D
