I have been saving some money and now cannot decide whether I want to get a benchmade 665 APB, or a ronin dojo pro #12. I would use the knife almost daily, but swords are really cool. Please help me decide, thanks.

If you look around enough you could get a custom Slimline machete/sword made of CPM3V for the same price as that sword. Or if you won't be using that, get a folder for sure! You can find great ones on here for sale by other forum people, mint or very lightly used for much cheaper than you would in a store. You could get a great folder here for the price. Unless you have your heart set on those two blades, in that case, definitely go with the one you'll use the most, (or enjoy the most!) :) Good luck!!

Go with the knife. You will appreciate it more over time as you carry and use it. You'll become connected with it.

I've had things that were cool and expensive and beautiful...but just swung them at air, or pointed them in the mirror doing my best Bobby De Niro or just polished them in the garage...never a connection made..the thrill was in the "getting"...and that quickly fades..

You can always start saving again and get the one you don't choose now, later..

With all that said...swords are badass.

Good luck with your choice.

Katana? Katanas suck and are overrated, in my opinion. I saw the Benchmade listed for $178. Swords in the <400 USD price range are usually crappy quality. If it is between a $178 sword and a benchmade, go with the knife. If you really want to get into sword collecting save more.

Here is a good video on starting a sword collection:

If I could magically convert all of my swords into money without the difficulty involved in selling them, I probably would. They are cool, of course, but they spend all of their time put away except for one or two ghost head dao that get used to remove offending tree limbs and shrubs. A knife that you carry and use is far more satisfying. But if you are set on having a cool backyard hobby, axes are also badass. A handful of tomahawks aren't expensive, handles are easy to replace, and I have never regretted an hour or two of throwing.

the CAS katanas are certainly not crap and can be had around 400$.

I say go for the sword man, gotta have some fun blades too :)

EDIT: some CAS katanas can be had closer to 250$ and are very much usable.

There can be only one!

There are plenty of people banging the Busse drum but theyve made a great short sword.

You need a 'Gladius.'

:)

Since you asked, in my opinion, I guess it all depends on what you do more....cutting stuff or running around in the the backyard going "wu-shaa". If its the former get the knife, if its the latter get the sword.

I'd get the knife.

I'd love to be the adult and reaffirm that swords are not practical and you'll never use it and to get a knife that you can use and carry every day as it will be much more rewarding....

but I can't ...... truth is most folks need 1 good folding EDC pocket knife, and 1 good fixed blade camping/hunting/survival knife and they can for the most part get by....

As the owner of almost half a dozen Viking axes, 6 or 8 spears, more than a few quality swords, throwing hawks and knives of all kinds.... I'll say that they too can provide endless amounts of fun and can be just as rewarding to collect....

Dude, life is short, do what makes YOU happy.... its so easy to fall into the whole I got another 350.00 folding pocket knife to add to the stack cause its what a lot of folks here do and after awhile it seems normal.... you get caught up in the forum brotherhood and almost succumb to peer pressure and want to show off something new and cool and be one of the guys....

If the sword will make you happy, get it, and a few dozen machetes after that, and a couple axes, and spears, and etc etc.... then figure out how to make yourself a throwing target, cutting stand etc.....

Heck at one point I made a martial arts style 3 section spinning training dummy and added sword trainers to the arms and used it to practice with ..... it was a lot of fun for years till I had to reclaim the space and disassemble it. Wish I had gotten pictures but it was back before the digital age and they would have just been old 35mm pics....

Anywho... the point is, find a way to make the hobby fit you and provide enjoyment.... don't try and make yourself fit the hobby the way it works for everyone else....

I spent a few years (and around $20,000) collecting appx. 100 swords; it was fun. I did some backyard cutting which was also fun. Have not paid much attention to them for 4 years now and the thought of selling them, with the difficulty of packaging and shipping their big butts is a turn off. Through that time (and before and since) I have accumulated appx. 375 knives and I still enjoy them. If it becomes necessary to sell, it's no big deal. Sooo, to answer your question, I suggest you go easy on swords (a couple would be fun) and go crazy on the knives ;). YMMV As has been said, get what makes you happy, just TRY to keep some self control .

Get a CS Espada XL. 7" long folding blade. Its a pocket sword.
