Ok..
this has happened a few times here as of the last few months
I will NOT and never will name names..
YOU know very well who you are.
I have received knives packaged so very very very poorly.
A "8" year old would have done a better job..
Most involved in BF are adults...

Take some pride and integrity in a deal..
TAKE the extra time to secure the knife in a box and
try to do you best to seal securely to keep thieves out.
I HATE POSTAL THIEVES..
You can get ""FREE"" USP labels and shipping supplies at the USPS website
You order them They ship right too you. I have ordered them for years.
It takes about 15 seconds for a thief at a sorting facility to cut a box open and
send it down the line..It has been proven by the USPS that if its taped very well with
extra labels on all the edges..The thief will pass it up..
Think about that when you are shipping an 75$ spyderco or 900$ custom lambert..
REALLY..This is getting ridiculous...Boxes not taped or padding not around knife.
Thrown in the box with a few pieces of paper towel around it and moving all
around the box..

I have see some UNREAL STUFF..

For me..My reputation for packaging speaks in volumes to folks I have dealt with
I TAKE THE extra time.. WELL because it the way I want my knife to get too me..SAFELY and
its the RIGHT THING to do. My reputation in here is stellar and I BUILT it..
I would like too keep it like that.

Just some advice..To seasoned members and NEW members--
Your character and integrity speaks to the person you deal with by how
you carry yourself..In communication to shipping to the happiness of the other
person.. Remember--The deal is NOT DONE until both side are happy..

Sorry everyone. A bit long winded..
Some one I am certain has pulled the trigger on this
but it needs to be addressed again.
Id be grateful for some feedback
Thank you all my BF Family

You forget the Hallelujah, hallelujah, brother at the end:D

But I agree with you 100% my friend!!

You got that right Keith .. I had a trade deal with someone and let me tell you he almost lost out on a Beautiful custom knife he sent me. No lie it was a larger flat USPS box the box was crushed and edges were torn and if it had to go much further would have fallen out. There was a few pieces of news paper but it still left it flopping around. (( don't use jerkit outside of Whine & Cheese ))

It is pretty simple . Take the knife. Put it in the box it came in . If it is loose in that box wrap it with something so it wont move when you shake it. Next get a box . The best box you can find a USPS box is best . When you pack the small box in the big box and stuff it super tight and shake ... Does it move ?? Repeat until it doesn't . Then tape . Tape like you mean it !!

If you send something and it goes missing .. You will loose money .. be embarrassed and you integrity will be in question.. Tape the box

Good post Keith .. Should be brought to the top every month.

I have never understood how careless some can be when dealing with valuable items or any thing for that matter. I find it very annoying and will return anything that was sent with poor packaging and damaged or lost in transit.

Thats how i do it.

Heres what i do when i send a knife off without the original box nor a substitute.
Wrap the knife in bubble wrap and tape it up with packing tape. Put that in a ziplock bag and then pack accordingly.

Even with the box i use the Ziploc.

Excellent, very important issue, that I'm glad you brought up, Keith. I was contemplating starting a thread, on this very subject.

Approximately 3 months ago, I received a $275 knife from a member here on BF. This was shipped & taped inside a USPS small flat rate box. This knife had bubble wrap around it, but it was taped up against one of the sides of the box, with zero packing materials. The knife came loose during transit, & bounced around inside the 85% void, during it's long journey. This caused the pivot screw to loosen significantly, so that when it arrived & I opened the box, the first thing that I thought was: this isn't going to be good...when I deployed the blade & noticed that it had very noticeable blade play- I just shook my head. I immediately contacted the seller & let him know the situation. He was suspicious/upset & couldn't understand how the knife became loose (felt he had done an adequate job packing/taping the knife to the side of the box).

I thought about making an adjustment to the pivot, however I've read enough thread's here in the GBU to know, once I do anything to the knife, I just bought it! I ended up returning the knife (only the 2nd time that I've ever had to do this); I packaged this back up, the way I ship my knives. I ended up losing $15 on this knife I purchased, just having to ship it back. When the seller received it back, he was livid, (because of the blade play)...a half an hour later, I subsequently received a follow up email, letting me know that he tightened the pivot & that it was brand new again with solid lockup.

There is NO LIVE AND LEARN crap..
BE RESPONSIBLE..
If the tables where turned and I just threw the knife coming to you in a box and said screw
it..Well we know the s^%$ would hit the FAN..

Its a lack of ""COMMON SENSE"" which isnt readily handed out these days..
Book smart and intelligence DOES NOT make a good seller/trader in BF

Ignorance is NOT and excuse for NOT being considerate and being NOT being responsible

And one other thing

This has happened too me 3 times in the last 6 months
WHY--I havent a CLUE..
I shipped USPS--with tracker the whole deal--INSIDE in USA 3 days ..
normally 2 days if youre lucky..
THEY ship parcel post or 1st class.
OK that BS has too stop.
I am perfectly clear now with my sales and or purchases-trades
WE ship the same way..US Priority with tracking
They ship thru their employer or they are too cheep to flip the bill to ship.
So heres how it goes down..
They get their knife-item in 2 days
Here I am wanting to get this deal done
Still waiting 6-7 days later..
That crap has too stop..................

Yes, it's shocking and indefensible!

My packaging looks pretty crude but nothing moves inside and there's a kilometre or two of heavy tape all over it:D It might not look nice but it does the job:D:thumbup:

Great thread and I HOPE it's viewed by everyone! I take a lot of pride in my shipping and ONLY use USPS priority boxes, padded extremely well and taped on all corners and edges.
I've gotten to the point were before I purchase or trade I demand the same from the other party. What kills me is when they ship in a USPS priority envelope, it's the same damn price!! It also destroys the knife box.

100% agree with everything said.

There have been threads like this before, but unfortunately, the subject needs to be addressed periodically. I'm amazed at how little effort some put in to their packaging and have no clue as to what can happen during shipping. I once received and ESEE 5 (from another member) in a manila envelope. Luckily, it was shipped in the original plastic bag (inside the envelope), which kind of held things together, but the envelope was torn in several places and the point of the knife was sticking out of it when it arrived. I'm surprised the post office would even handle it.

Maybe our feedback forms should include an option to rate the packaging. Mike

USPS first class service is fine - if it is tracked and insured I seriously cannot tell the difference. My first class packages RARELY take more than three days to arrive and are usually early - the exception being during the holiday season rush.

Otherwise, I agree a lot of heartache can be prevented with some extra effort carefully packaging something prior to shipping. I just take all of the bubble wrap, foam, etc. I get from my purchases and reuse it to secure the stuff I sell. Ideally nothing should bounce around in the box.

On that note:

I thought about making an adjustment to the pivot, however I've read enough thread's here in the GBU to know, once I do anything to the knife, I just bought it!

You could have contacted the seller, explained the situation, and gotten his okay to tighten the pivot. Could have saved you $15 and a trip to the post office in addition to the knife you wanted. Just a thought . . .

I agree 100% with whats posted. Especially with whoever said it shouldn't move when shaken. Keep packing it until you can shake the crap out of it and zero movement. I try and pride myself on my packing. When you open my package I want you to look around and ask "Is this guy screwing with me?"

Lol, I over pack and think people probably get a laugh also.

I did- we exchanged several emails. In my first correspondence, I provided my phone number, & asked him to give me a call- so that we could have a clearer channel of communication. He never called. It wasn't so much the $15, it was more the principal; in the end, I'm just happy that we were able to work out a solution without any drama.

The point is: had this knife been carefully packaged, this scenario more than likely, would never have materialized.

Agree with the packing bit 100%, but first class is a reasonable service as is priority. I prefer first class since I provide my packaging and do not use usps provided one - it is typically fast and reaches in 3 days across the U.S. However, my advertise states I'll ship first class, so the buyer knows the timeframe.

Recently a knife sent to me using first class took 6 days from one end of California to 5 hours away. How is beyond me

Why should a criminal be able to cut through a box but then stay away from doing so only if there's some thin tape around it?
I haven't sold anything recently and not here yet but on that auction site I always went nuts to make sure things don't wiggle or cut themselves out of their box.
But I dont see how any kind of tape I know would have stopped a criminal postal employee. Are there any preferred tapes? Maybe something that is reinforced with thin metal threads or kevlar? Or am I thinking out of the box too much?
