Oops. I put this in the wrong forum to start with. Here we go.

Do you guys freehand your knife patterns or do you have something to copy? There are several patterns I like and want to make. Would it be worth it to buy the cheap version (China) and dismantle it to use as a pattern? Are there any resources to obtain patterns? I did a search on here but came up nada. Thanks guys!

I do a combination of tracing and freehanding. I freehand if the design is totally new. If it has elements that are similar to other knives that I have made (or designed) then I will trace certain parts or even start by tracing the whole thing and then make changes.

Sometimes I freehand, sometimes I wing it (no drawing at all). Usually I let the materials "talk" to me and look for patterns in the metal or wood that tell me what needs to be part of the knife and what needs to be ground into dust.

Copying isn't something I do.

I free hand most of my designs to paper and then transfer to a "template" for final refinement. Not only can you use the template to get a feel for the design, but you can use it to trace as many of the designs onto the knife steel itself as you want to make.

I've also "free handed" in AutoCAD.

If you're looking at making something like a folder (framelock, liner lock, lockback or slip joint) THEN I might recommend buying a couple to take apart, just to get the feel of how they go together.

I freehand new types of knives, but for ones that I make many of then I use a template from sheet metal.

The only patterns i use are for when i make folders where there are moving parts that must intereact with each other.

I do have one pattern for my youth knives that i make sometimes. They are just ground out with no forging.

For all my forged knives i just forge and grind till it looks right.
