On the 20th of this month I missed an auction for a knife I really wanted.
The auction ended with no bids.
I couldn't stop thinking about the knife so a couple of days later I emailed the seller - also the maker in this case - and asked him if I could purchase it for his reserve. I was very pleased and appreciative when he agreed to do so.
I received a knife on the 25th - three days later.
Imagine my surprise and dissapointment when it wasn't the knife pictured in the auction.
I emailed the maker immediately, indicating this was not the knife I had expected to receive. I also took some time to detail what specifically I liked about the knife in the auction. Then I asked if it would be OK to return this one.
I have not yet heard back from him.
It has only been 3 days and it is Easter but the delay in receiving a response from him has made me wonder if there is any reason to expect I shouldn't be able to return this knife to him.

Yep, but not like that. This being said, 3 days of miscommunication is nothing to get hung up about. Most likely, the guy got confused and is away from the shop right now.

If it continues, and when you feel sure you're not going to get your due, you should ost his name.

I don't have a perfect solution. One partial solution is to only buy from when you can play with the knife, i.e., shows. Another is to buy from shps, and return the knife if unsatisfied, but then you pay a slight premium.
