Hello all,
I am new to this forum. I just have a quick question. I am thinking of purchasing a knife and want a folder and don't want to pay more then $40 including shipping. I am not looking for a top quality knife obviously, considering my limited price range. The uses will be some everyday use (not much) but also as a protection thing. I picked out two Colombia River knives that looked nice. These: http://cheaperthandirt.com/41355-55231-1276.html
http://cheaperthandirt.com/41356-55232-2671.html

They are both made of AUS 4 steel, and are pretty much the same knife, one having a tanto blade and the other having a spear blade. What are the real differences between these blades? Are these knives good for the money, or pieces of junk. I am awake AUS 4 may not be the best steel but I am not looking for the best out there but just something okay.
Thanks in advance!

here ya go bub, in your price range, and a heckuva lot better blade steel (440c)

Get a Spyderco or Byrd- much better knives in that price range.

The CRKT M16 models are somewhat decent for the price you want to pay. You may also want to check out the Benchmade Vex, Benchmade mini-Ambush (I've seen one at Dick's Sporting Goods for around $35-$40, save yourself the cost of shipping) or take a look at Kershaw which has some decent knives for a low price like the mini-Cyclone or the Leek which both come standard with Speedsafe Assisted Opening. Hope this helps.

I will take all that into consideration. But as far as the tanto blade vs. spear point blade, what are the differences?

From that website I would look at Byrd knives (found under Spyderco).
I would also look at KaBar Doziers.

Either has good fit and finish and has a blade that will hold an edge better than AUS4.

CDT does not carry benchmade. From other websites I would look at the Benchmade Vex, pika II, or Monochrome.

Some will say the tantos are useless and only "look" good. I won't go that far...but I did EDC the tanto version of the two knives you posted. On several occasions I wished it had a "normal" blade. In fact, that's the reason I stopped carrying it, favoring my kershaw vapor that has less grip, an less comfortable grip..and is much harder to open...BUT it has a normal drop point blade which is much more useful to me.

I'll grant it this...for a $20 knife I could get the straight lines of that tanto blade screaming sharp in short order.

I believe that Wal-Mart still sells the Spyderco Native (S30V Steel) for $40 and it's a heck of a knife.

That has to be a regional thing.

I've never seen a Wal-Mart carry ANY Spyderco at home or school.

Sure haven't seen them carry anything with S30V either! lol

The Walmart near me carries the Spyderco Native for $40, the Kershaw Blur for around $50 and the Kershaw Leek for around $40.

Ok here's my list, you can order these off this website: http://www.thebladeshop.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=8 This will not include shipping

I suggest that you take the WalMart advice and go to your local one and check out the Spyderco Native. It is a GREAT knife for 40.00 and you can check out several while there to check for fit and finish and action. Something you can't do on the internet sales sites, plus you can have it on the same day. No wait!

Thanks for all of your help. I narrowed my search down to the Kershaw Storm II, the Benchmade Vex tanto or pika, and lastly the spyderco native.

Out of those four choices I would definetely go with either the Spyderco Native or The Benchmade Vex. Either of these two knives will give you more bang for your buck than the other two being that the Native has s30v steel and the Vex offers a G10 handle as well as the phenominal quality of a Benchmade.

Well as we speak I am ordering the Benchmade Vex with tanto blade in black. Thanks for all your help guys!
p.s. I was going to go with the native but I just liked the looks of that benchmade a little more and dont think Ill use the knife enough to fully appreciate that great steel it has.

No problem, have fun with your knife!

and by have fun I mean be careful...

Thanks Squeezymo, and of course all the other posters. I don't really want to pay credit card so I'm gonna buy from another website.

Well, I guess I'm a bit late, but the Spyderco Native in S30V is in my opinion the best value available in a knife.
