Trying to help a friend find a knife. Probably a folder, for general camping use. I'd think perhaps a half serrated blade would be good for this. ~2" blade. <$30. (obviously its not going to be anything super great.

Any ideas?

This IMHO would be your best bet for a camping knife...

This knife is super great and in your budget :D

THAT'S a lot of class for an inexpensive knife. And a SAK or multitool is way more useful than a flimsy knife-shaped object.

I have a Victorinox Ranger myself, which is the same as the Huntsman except it also has a file.

I agree with you, I take my Leatherman Juice Pro. He has a very very cheap folder at the moment, I think he got it at a gas station or auto store or something. You know, the kind they have in the plastic jars like candy for like $3.00 or something like the cheapo's Bud K has. He pretty much just wants to upgrade that but I'm not sure he can do a whole lot better with that budget. He was looking at a Gerber River Shorty but I explained to him that its a PDF knife. I suppose it might do the job but I wouldn't have high expectations for something thats really just intended to cut rope in an emergancy.

if it's for camping, you don't really want a folder. I'd recommend a CS Bushman or mini, or a Frosts Swedish Army fixed blade, heck even a good old Kabar.

if it really is a $30 folder you want, get a kabar dozier or BM Pika or mini.

Small, hard-working knives = Spyderco.

Spyderco DragonFly Lightweight, $33, 2.3" blade.
Spyderco MeerKat, $35, 2" blade.
Spyderco Jester, $23, 1.9" plain or serrated blade.
Spyderco LadyBug, $19, 2" partly serrated blade.
I have both the Ladybug and the Meerkat. The Ladybug makes a great keyring knife but for a slightly more usefull knife I'd replace the Meerkat with the Calypso Jnr. A bit bigger sure, but a much better cutting knife.

Yes, 2" is a bit on the small side. Of course, it also depends on what "camping" amounts to. If a small fixed blade would do, it's hard to beat a Mora or similar knife. Otherwise, a 3" to 3.5" folder can handle almost anything, and serrations aren't a real advantage in the woods.

I think a fixed would be better suited but if he wants a folder the ka-bar is a tough folder. I think a few extra bucks for the bigger fixed blade would be a better idea IMHO. As an after thought, if he is set on a decent folder though CRKT has a great line also. I have three that get beat up on a daily basis.

Good luck!!

maybe one the of Byrd model spydercos?

or if you up the cash I think the Benchmade Mini Grip is the bomb....

Under 30$ ? Bushman by CS , or by the baby Bushman and have enough leftover for some ale :D

I prefer something lightweight for camping/backpacking. An Opinel is what I've carried outdoors for the last 15 years. They've been the standard outdoor knife in Europe for 100 years. It's easily performed every cutting task I've ever encountered in the outdoors.

Prior to the Opinel, I carried a BuckLite. Lightweight, good steel, durable, hand-sized. A bit bulky though, compared to the Opinel, and I wouldn't go back.

Currently, I'm considering a switch from an Opinel to the AG Russell Hunter's Scalpel in order to save weight. 8/10ths of an ounce, AUS-8 steel, $20. It's not a folder, but snaps into a hard plastic quick-release sheath.

I'm also a fan of the AG Russell Woodswalker. Another straight knife, but pocket-sized and very convenient.

The SAK is an OK idea. One of the Dozier designed K-Bar knives would be good too. Have you seen the Mora knifes? Inexpensive and durable.

Is your friend a hunter? If so, I recommend a fixed blade instead of a folder. Getting animal goo out of a folder...

Plenty of good choices in your price range. Just avoid the "Made in China," "Made in Pakistan," "Frost Cutlery," "United Cutlery" crap.

Happy Shopping,
-Bob

Get a baby Bushman on eBay or at a flea market and a good used Victorinox Ranger. If you watch the prices carefully, you can get by with that 30 bucks.

Hello there. I'm the guy GQGeek is talking about in the first post. Basically I want a small light fixed blade knife for camping. I don't hunt.

I thought about getting the Mini Bushman from CS, but 9" is a bit longer than what I'm looking for.

I've been thinking about getting this Bear Claw by Columbia River. Anyone have any reviews on this one?

Also, the knife I have now is just a $5 piece of crap I got from BudK.

Thanks for the help.

Edit: I've found better prices than that site.

You really use all these tools when camping?! :)

Personally - I would take a sturdy fixed blade like the Ontarios SpecPlus SP-26 USN3 which you can get at around 35 bucks here and which comes with a *real* lifetime guarantee (unlike Victorinox which also promises you a lifetime guarantee from Ontario but which, in reality, treats you like bovine excreta when it actually comes to servicing your knife).

For an extra 5 bucks you will have a really time-proven strong knife.

YMMV
