Knife recomendation

Spyderco knives are great and I carry a Rescue model everyday.
But for overall utility and handiness I would recommend a large Victorinox with a locking blade. I think they even have one or two designed for nautical purposes.

Good luck,
Allen.

How about an AFCK (812) with the BT2 coating. I wouldn't recommend the M2 because of it's properties, but an ATS-34 one would be ok. Plus, you can get them fairly cheap right now.
Good Luck,
Matt

Can't miss with a Spyderco.
I find it refreshing to hear that the academy requires cadets to have a knife. How, uhh, reasonable!

Thanks for all the help guys, I now have a few ideas and will mostlikely go witha spiderco, but I am still not sure. I would b enice if we could have fixed blade knives but then I would get carried away acting like a pirate.

Before I go any further, I have to confess: I am biased towards Emerson knives. With that said........I would recommend an Emerson Commander or SARK, or a Mission MPD Dive knife. Emerson's should run $120-180 and the Mission will take about 150 bites out of yer wallet. Both are damn good knives tho...........so use a lanyard. Hope this helps.

Celticjedi: The best piece of advice I can give you (besides buying Spyderco early and often), is to surf around Bladeforums' own Exchange forum. You can always find good deals on second-hand knives there and, as you can imagine, the VAST majority of it is quality. I've bought, sold and traded on the Exchange forum and never had a bad deal. [With that said, use common sense.] It is a great place to get a great working knife at a bargain price.
