Knife Recommendation for an Air Force Academy Cadet

Lol, awesome! They still showing movies at the Tivoli? That was a HUGE distraction when I was there!!! I think the whole school ditched class when "Toy Story" first came out (my wife, then GF, and me included). :D

LOL! [emoji23]

I'm not entirely sure, but I think they might. Then again, I spend very little time at the Tivoli.

Thank you for all of the recommendations! I really appreciate it! This is my list of possibilities so far:

•Spyderco PM 2
•Spyderco Manix 2
•Protech TR 5
•Emerson CQC 7

I'll add a suggestion for a fixed blade. This might be something that he can take on summer training exercises, but he'll have to look into that - the Fallkniven F1 Swedish AF Pilot survival knife. Its highly regarded in the outdoor survival community for very good reasons

The ESEE 5 was "Designed by military SERE instructors as a hard-use downed pilot’s survival knife."

Awesome suggestions! I think I'll add a fixed blade section to my list.

I own a couple of ESEE 5 knives and several Fallkniven F1s. Got them to evaluate the designs. The ESEE is big, thick, and heavy. I can't really imagine a pilot wanting to carry it and sidearm & other survival kit. I also think an exposed steel tang isn't a good idea on a knife that might be needed in extremely cold weather, possibly without gloves. - - There's a sheath in plastic offered for the F1 that is rectangular in shape & sometimes knife hobbyists complain about it not being 'more form fitting'. Its designed that way for a purpose. Ever try to get a knife out of a sheath where moisture has accumulated and now its frozen stuck ? And ever try to keep gear in good condition in wet conditions, including Alaska ? Stainless steel/synthetic stocked rifles are popular up there for a reason. The F1 is a well designed knife that would likely work well for a pilot IMO. Not only would it work in an arctic environment- it will work in jungle or desert too.

Thanks for the info! I came across those complaints you mentioned about the sheath, but the way you explained how it works makes sense!

I think if I was in the cadet's position I would want a Spyderco Gayle Bradley Air. I would want something that is not too big, light weight, and very well built!

Here is a video about the Spyderco Gayle Bradley Air.

It is my EDC when flying.

Awesome! I think those have been discontinued for a while now, but they probably pop up from time to time?
