Knife recommendation - My life may depend on it.

The sad thing is Cold Steel is mentioned in the same
thread with Busse, Swamp Rat, Bark River and Ranger....:D

In the extremely humble opinion of an 18-year-old, I would say stick with a proven favorite:
the ubiquitous KA-BAR. Why?

Inexpensive, around $50,

Easy-to-sharpen, strong, 1095 carbon steel,

Proven performance as can be attested by anyone in or formerly in the USMC,

Very useful blade point/shape,

Handguard, which may or may not be useful in your case,

and Replacements can be found somewhat easily.

The only thing is I might go with one with the Kraton handle and Kydex sheath as leather washers and the like might have a tendency to rot, although in my experience leather rot has never been an issue, at least in the short term-provided you apply vegetable oil or wax every so often.

Maybe I'm just a stupid kid but out of the 2 dozen or so fixed blades I've really played around with it'd probably be my pick off the top of my head.

Bear spray for the paranoid. Walking stick for balance. Wenger Ranger and Mini-Canadian for knives. And a deck of cards for fun.

The AT has been the scene of at least one brutal murder in the Smokies back in the 1970s. Plus haven't you watched Deliverence :)

First, I hope you take a good pistol with you.

Second, any strong full-tang knife made by a reputable
company should work fine, but I recommend additionally,
1) a small "hunter" knife like the Puma Pro Skinner; and
2) a Cold Steel 6-inch folding knife like the Vaquero
Grande or the Voyager X2.

The Puma Pro Skinner (left) will handle small jobs, while
the strong but lightweight Cold Steel Voyagers, or
Vaqueros, will offer inexpensive SD backup.
