I would like to get my husband a really good all purpose knife for Christmas. What do you recommend and why?

Thanks,
Jody :)

hi jody, what is your budget and by all purpose, do you mean something with several different blades (like "suisse army knife" aka SAK) or one good blade that is multipurpose?

welcolm here, it's nice to see woman interested in knives (even if it just for your husband):D

Hi Nitestarz nice to see a wife making the effort to get something knifey and sharp for her man.If you elaborate more on what use ,size ,folder, fixed etc i am pretty sure the people on here will give you a list as long as your arm and then some.Don't forget what price range, personally i like the more reasonable stuff so i like cold steel srk ,becker9 bowie, becker neck knife. Please don't read reasonable as "cheap" as the aforementioned are very sturdy performers. All the best on your quest and let us know what the lucky guy is getting off Santa.:D

Not knowing what your hubby would use his knife for -
My first thought was a BM ( Benchmade ) 710HS - A piece of cuttlery any man would feel proud of owning, and using.

My next thought was a Leatherman Charge TI, it is one very nice tool / knife combo that would make a great gift to receive from a loved one. Is also handy for them odd jobs around the house.

Happy shopping.

I'll give you two easy choices of knife models for everyday use that won't break the bank yet are first class.

My first choice is the BENCHMADE GRIPTILLIAN model 550. Great steel blade (holds an edge for a long time) , handle material (comfortable to use for a long time), axis locking, great warranty. Very popular among users.

My second choice is the serrated SPYDERCO DELICA which has to be one of the top ten most popular knives made and sold. It is an easy knife to carry, not too big or bulky and very well made. Again great steel, handle, size, etc. etc. etc.

I lied - I have a third choice.

If he is mechanical and handy and pokes around the house, yard, shop, truck/car, etc. then take a look at a LEATHERMAN. It is a vastly improved swiss army knife with a a pliers, little saw, knife blade, screw drivers, etc. all in one well made package that sits in a nylon pouch on your belt. It is "THE" multi-tool that started the revolution.

Do you have any unmarried sisters around whos name and phone number you might want to share with us ?!!!

check out the spyderco delica also. its a good quality, good size, all around pocket knife. you can pick one up on ebay for 50 bucks

Assuming that your husband would like something for every day carry, I would recommend the Calypso Jr., which features include a thin flat ground blade that cuts like a laser, a premium blade steel that will stay sharp a very long time, a light weight ergonomic handle, a blade hole for one hand opening and a reversible right/left pocket clip for convenient carry.

The Calypso Jr. is discontinued but recently has returned in a very limited edition with burgundy handles and laminated ZDP189 steel….you can still find them but they are selling out fast.

Hello Nitestarz and welcome to Bladeforums.

Maybe you can give us a little more info on your husband...
What does he do for a living?
Is he handy with tools and do-it-yourself projects?
Does he have expensive taste in watches, jewelry, cars?
Would you say that he's more of a "country boy" or more of a "city slicker"?

Cheers,
Allen

I would say upto $150 would be my budget. All purpose, 1 blade. He already has a swiss army knife but wants something better.
He is a mechanic and is very handy with all sorts of projects around the house.

What a great wife!

The amount you're willing to spend is perfect for getting an excellent quality production folding knife. It gets you out of the plastic-handle range that runs from about $40-$60.

I'm going to second the Benchmade 710HS as the top choice. It's one of my favorite knives, and I consistently come back to it after trying other knives. It does everything well. It's a knife he will be proud of, and that will last him a lifetime if he provides it with minimal care. Plus, in the unlikely event he would need it, Benchmade's warranty service is very good. If he appreciates fine tools, he will definitely appreciate the 710HS. New Graham (www.newgraham.com) sells the 710HS for about $119.

One more thought -- if he doesn't have a sharpening system, consider picking him up a Spyderco Sharpmaker kit to maintain the edge of his new knife. They run about $40-45.

Merry Christmas!

Yes, he takes great care of all of "his toys". Thank you for all your help. I had no idea where to begin! :-)

yep, i'll suggest same as KeithAM a BM 710 (and don't believe the ones that suggest a brand named Spyderco ;) )
If i were you i'll try to see if he likes "serrated" blade or plain edge.

Or you can get one new from NewGraham Knives for $42.

Many here are recommending a BM 710, which I just bought as well. Beware that it comes as a tool steel M2 and as a stainless steel. The stainless isn't coated so it looks more like a knife to NON knife nuts (like us) but the M2 steel is really tough stuff. You can't go wrong with either really.

Edit : Beware = Be aware

For $150 (and usually less) you can get some of the best production folders available.

How about a Spyderco Manix? It is really tough, has a great lock and excellent blade steel. If you want something smaller, maybe a Spyderco Paramilitary would be a good idea (don't be fooled by the name it is an excellent tool).

An Al Mar SERE 2000 could be another possibility.

Those three cost around $100 and are built like tanks. Check out www.knifeworks.com

I'm printing this thread to show my girlfriend an example of Christmas behaviour!
