Hey all, looking for a solid wilderness knife, for camping/hiking chores around 8 or 9 inches long. I think I've narrowed the search down to the Busse SAR-8 or NMSFNO, however they seem to be hard to come by. Any other suggestions?

I'm getting a Ontario SP50

I have an ontario SP-43, which is one of their 8" versions. Its 5150 with a full flat grind. It has rubber grips which are nothing special to look at but are pretty comfy. It is "full tang". The thickness is 3/16" The grind was slightly off-center, it came ok'ish sharp. The sheath is not overly impressive. I like the knife.

That being said, the NMSFNO is really an awesome knife. With the NM treatment it is one the best finished knives I have owned. It came with a convex grind. No sheath and expensive, and now even more so. I liked it too much to actually start using it and then money got tight. It is one the knives I would love to buy again if/when financed allow for such purchases.

I also would check out the kecker camp magnum camp knife.

Thanks all for recommendations. I forgot to add one note, must be made in the USA, I know that rules out a few.

For hiking? Yes, I do have a suggestion.

A smaller knife. You want to hike with a 9 inch knife hanging off you? Something that big is a camp knife...which stays in camp. Hence the name.

For a camp knife...I'd suggest the Bark River Hudson Bay. Its an actual camp knife.

Since you're looking at primarily Busse's, so I suspect u don't want just any knife (U want something that is TOUGH and something that u can bet your life on). Look at ESEE Junglas, it's about as tough as any Busse kins, except INFI thou. Search for Junglas destruction video on Youtube and u'll see why it's is well liked among users.

Oh BTW, it's 100% USA Made.

That Condor Hudson Bay has had good reviews. And for the price point, its a solid bet.

BK 9 from Becker or Junglas from ESEE. Both U.S. made both high quality.

Yeah, I figure it'll last a lifetime, might as well get the best. I saw the Junglas, but thought it might be too big. Having said that, I stumbled onto the Busse Bushwacker Mistress which looks nice.

gossman knives are great wilderness knives scott has a number of different models but since you want a 8'' blade id recommend his big boar tusker ! this is one of his most popular models he also has a number of steel options like A2,O1,D2,S90V,154CM,S35VN,440C. im getting a 10 inch big boar tusker in S5 tool steel. he mostly makes them in A2and O1 steel tho and ive heard nothing but great things about his knives . plus 100% made in USA. also look at esee knives as well.

If your looking at a big blade, go an inch or two bigger and get the ESEE Junglas. I spent months researching all the big knives and you just can't beat the Junglas and it's Kydex sheath. It's what I ended up getting and I have no regrets what so ever.

I have a Kabar Cutlass Machete which has about a 10" blade and would be useful for the your intended purpose. Has a pretty good leather sheath too. Just noticed, mine is made in Taiwan. Guess that eliminates this one. I don't think I'd want to peel potatoes with it, but otherwise it is a great inexpensive chopper and one I'd be very comfortable having along with me. I'd probably make my wife carry it and I would carry the Golok mentioned below. :)

The Condor Hudson Bay is not made in the USA, but would be a good choice for a camp knife.

The ESEE Junglas would be a good choice as would the BK9. I haven't actually handled a BK9, but everyone seems to like them. Both are similar and probably would be my choice if I limited my selection to US made blades.

I like big knives as much as the next guy, but I invariably choose a 12" Ontario machete for rough chopping (cheap too), a smaller general purpose fixed blade like the Dozier Wilderness knife, and a folder for detail tasks. The Condor Golok is going to be my go-to blade if I want something longer than the 12" Ontario. This blade has really captured my interest for outdoor use.
