Knife Repair History

Its nice to see how responsive Kershaw is with replacement parts, but is also enlightening to see how often they get mentioned here- I guess practice makes perfect? Also, it tells me something when they send everyone multiple torsion bars.

Not meant to slam Kershaw, but I would rather have knives that didn't require regular replacement of parts.

I think the number of replacement torsion bars whether Kershaw or not indicates that this is one part that can break. Probably doesn't affect the knife function since it will still open and lock but does affect the fun factor. That's why I am glad I live in an automatic friendly state because when my spring breaks I can send it back through a dealer for replacement. I do know some places sell replacement springs, can someone post a link they trust for our brothers that can't ship back an auto with a broken spring? Any auto makers ship replacement springs?

As mentioned before, Protech will ship you a spring. I had a Runt spring snap, and they sent me 2 springs, free of charge. Haven't needed the second one in 3 years, as I also received some good advice about handling coil-spring autos. (don't heat up the spring by excessive continuous play):D

Lone Wolf has excellent customer service. Sent a Valmatic in after I stripped the screws in the clip. Also fixed my Double Duty. (they forgot the Loctite), and admitted it to me with an apology. Fast turn around also. Plus a friendly human to talk to. Protech and Strider are both great also.

My only two repair experiences have been with spyderco.

The first one was an ATS-55 endura that I broke the tip on. I sent it to them and they sent me a new knife. I paid a total cost of $15. Turn around time was about 2 weeks.

The second one was a stainless left-hand spyderedge police model. I had received it in a trade for my emerson cqc-7 which I hated. The tip had been damaged by the original owner, and the action was very stiff. There was some rust on the stainless handle both on the outside and inside. I sent it to Spyderco and they reground the tip, sharpened the serrations, smoothed out the action and polished the handle and blade. I again paid $15 for this one. Turn around time was nearly a month.

I have a third one, which is a military s30v with g10 handles that a co-worker broke the tip on. I'll let you know what happens with it.

A coworker sent his spyderfly which some fool was flipping around and dropped to spyderco. They charged him $25 and replaced the damaged blade, the broken spring in the latch, and the broken pivot in the latch. Turn around time for him was nearly 3 months. This seemed kind of excessive to me.

Based on my experiences, I would wholeheartedly recommend spyderco knives to anyone.

My best experience was CRKT- Asked for a couple of screws for my Falcon folder and a new washers for buddy's small piont guard- they sent full set of screws, teflon washers, and even new LAWKS for BOTH knives! Free and recieved all parts in less than a week- And I am in Canada!
Wish I could say the same of warranty work from Spyderco, BearMGC, and Leatherman- but that was not asked of in this thread.

I generally repair my own knives as far as tip breakage and things like that. If it is something I can't do I send it to someone like STR. I really don't expect them to do repair work. I have had the following experiences however:

Buck- dropped a general and it fell on a rock (long fall) breakling the blade. Sent it in they sent me a new knife. Has been a long time ago can't recall turn around but it was free.

Spyderco-back when FRN clips were common I had several break off. At first I sent it in and they intstalled metal clip with screws. Then I just asked them to send me clip and screws second time and did it myself.

With metal clips I have seen a few break and Spyderco has always sent them no problem.

Nothing but good to say with both companies.

Had a friend recently get one of the small Gerber linerlocks as a wedding present (taiwan made I think). I inspected the knife after his trip to the emergency room when it sliced his finger bad requiring stitches and it was not lockable. The detent was the only thing locking it open. When he asked for a replacement they basicly said no as reported from him to me face to face.

Per your experience with the spyderco FRN clips:

"Spyderco-back when FRN clips were common I had several break off. At first I sent it in and they intstalled metal clip with screws. Then I just asked them to send me clip and screws second time and did it myself."

Spyderco originally handled this problem as a a warranty issue due to the design flaw with the clip. Spyderco has changed their policy; so installing replacement clips for FRN knives are now charge items. They may still send you the parts for free.

In my experience so far, Kershaw is very good about their lifetime warranty. I once sent in a knife that I had EDC'd for a couple of years. It was sharpened away to just about nothing and I asked for the price to get a new blade installed. Nothing else wrong with the knife, just worn out. I got a new knife of the same model in the mail a couple weeks later, no charge.
