Knife rescue tool for fire and EMS

You'd never see a 6" knife on the Fireground (Emergency Scene, whatever)...unless you wanted to have a LONG talk with your Capt. and/or BC. :foot: Unless we're talking a Shot/Hand-crew makin' up some fancy grub.

ahgar,
Buck 110...awesome, a classic for a reason. Has anyone else seen the BG-42 version from Cabela's (Alaskan Guide Version)? So...tempting...must resist.... I'll probably pick one up next paycheck.

Confederate,
The 6" CS Voyager would be a mad mama-jama for some SD knife-types. Personally I lean toward a SouthNarc/Pikal-Keating/Drawpoint-type SD knife. That and a good pair of running shoes.;)

flipe8,
I'd steer clear of the Boye knife. I had a PE Boat knife and I was REALLY surprised that it did not stay sharp that long, I think Cliff Stamp has some testing stuff on his website that supported the lack of edge-holding. I'd go for the Salt H1 Spyderco (from all accounts, not personal experience, it's a great knife).

Cameron23,
Thanks for the info. That's actually the second time I heard this about the Boye knives and it certainly makes me think twice on it. I'm a Spydie fan anyways and have always had good luck with them. Sometimes change isn't always good:thumbup:
Be safe and "Git in...!"

When boarding motored vehicles, I will have my Spyderco Assist with carbide tip breaker. The larger hole opener accompanied by the hood allows for easy opening, with or without gloves, strong hand or weak. The blunt tip can be used for expediente prying if necessary. It will also get under clothing/ seat belts with much less potential for inadvertently cutting the victim. The built in whistle may be helpful if one is trapped and unable to communicate thru 2 way radios. The carbide tip breaker REALLY works. I have already put it thru some trials. Some may view this folder as too "gadget" oriented. But my experience is that it is a good functional folder, especially if one cannot have every which tool on hand at all times.

I'm just an ordinary citizen. Knifes for me are just a hobby. So...i don't know if you can trust my opinion at 100%, but have you ever considered buying something from MOD (Master of defence)? I heard that their blades are very hard and sharp. Some models are equiped with belt cutter. I think it is a good choice for brand. http://www.mastersofdefense.com/

I own an MOD Mark I, II, ATFK, 685 and Stinger. The Mark I is the one with the belt cutter and windo breaker. The belt cutter works very well, but must be sent in in order to sharpen the cutter. I love MOD, they are very well built. If you can afford their high price, they are well worth it. The Mark I, I've seen for about $230-299 (299 is the manual retail).

Try:

premiumknives.com
newgraham.com

Hope this helps on the MOD section.

BTW. In terms of the glass breaker, I'm not too sure if it works, I've never had the chance to try. Your best bet is trully a ResQMe or an auto centerpunch. Check out the www.resqme.com .... look for the in action videos....

Or you could just carry a Kabar with you and break glass with the butt end...lol...

Actually, no.

A while back a firefighter posted here about his experience trying to break auto glass with blunt objects; in short, they just won't do it. Blunt force is exactly what auto safety glass is designed to resist! What makes those window breakers effective is their ability to apply a very sudden force to a very, very tiny area.

You don't want heavy and sturdy, you want fast and focused. Even a <1oz. Res-Q-Me will work better than that Kabar.

get him a centerpunch and any knife....chances are, he's not gonna be cutting many belts with his knife...since its too dangerous...but if he does...I keep a cheap boker magnum kalashnikov in my car...they r pretty damn sharp out of the box and it won't cost much if he loses it.

From Army to Emt. I still carry the CQD Mark I Serrated Edge LE From M.O.D
Has a seatbelt cutter, and window breaker. Has never let me down.
