Kind of new here.I have looked for threads that might shed some light on blade restoration, leather washer handle restoration.and other tips.Havent had much luck.Could somebody point me to a thread or website that might help.I aquired a nice PAL that needs some work.Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

First you gotta get the danged pommel off.... they are (either knife) pinned rather securely. After that a good serviceable leather washer handle can be installed albiet not as good or will it look exactly like the original.

good luck.

ps. you can buy the leather washers fror Texas knifemaker's Supply.

Thanks alot for the link, they have everything I need. This forum is a huge resource that I have only begun to tap.Like I said,I'm new here and it will take me a few days to figure it out.

Oh BTW,to answer your question about the type of PAL it is.I saw a PAL on ebay that looks just like the one I aquired and the guy is advertising it as a "WW II Vintage Fighting Knife PAL RH 36" Item #7126666625.In fact I am sure that is the model I have(the RH 36 is on the blade)I wasnt aware it was a military blade until I saw the knife on ebay.Looks more like a good camping knife. In my opinion theres not enough belly to make a descent skinner blade. Is the deep groove in the blade what is known as a "blood groove"?What is its purpose or function?

"Blood groove" is a common name for what's really called a "fuller". It's real purpose is to lighten and stiffen the blade, though some people will try to tell you that it's for letting blood flow out to make it easier to withdraw the blade.
