SMKW is running a Columbus Day "sale". One of the items is the Cold Steel Tanto Machete, which, according to them (today anyway) has a MSRP of $42.99 and which is "on sale" for $31.17 They also list the specs on the overall length of the machete incorrectly, twice. Even Cold Steel lists the incorrect overall length of the machete on it's particular page. I guess math and reading are not the strong suits for some people who work at these places.

Thing is, Cold Steel lists a price of $39..99 on their website, which I assume is the actual MSRP.

Knifecenter lists a MSRP of $34.99, their price is $33.95.

BHQ and GPK list MSRP as $26.99, with their prices being $22.95 and $23.95 respectively. Other major knife retailers don't carry this machete.

The obvious question is: What is up with the differences in the prices?

I get that the internet retailers set the price that they will sell an item for, usually within bounds of what the manufacturer allows, and many times one can get a great deal on a particular knife or knives because of that, whether it's because knives are being discontinued or other reasons.

But this kind of price discrepancy is ridiculous. The CS Tanto Machete is a good, quality machete, but when SMKW claims a MSRP that is higher than what even Cold Steel lists, and then tries to call it's price a "sale", that's just bogus, even if it temporarily cheaper than Knifecenter.

My apologies if I violated any forum rules, my intent is merely to start discussion about pricing differences. I will edit if asked to do so.

Their business their rules. Some companies factor in a higher profit margin than others.

I never pay any attention to the "suggested retail", MSRP, etc. It's all hog wash. The only thing that matters is the actual price. Period. Compare the actual price and buy from whom you feel most comfortable with.
