I have had a couple of transactions where a buyer wanted some references. What do they mean by that. Real names, email addresses, social media names, type of social media transaction took place, a message from the buyer to me that the sale was good and then I pass that along to the new buyer.

So what are buyers looking for?

I'm less concerned as a buyer than as a seller. Good transaction history on BF covers it for me.

On here, I look at their feedback score. That does it for me, if the report is very positive. If they are new, I try to take steps to minimize risk. Such as waiting until money gets transferred into the bank, or wait to pay until you have the knife delivered, in hand, then send payment.

That's why it's worth being at least a Gold member for the feedback score advantage. Worth it's weight in gold knowing you can trust a buyer/seller right out of the gate. You've got +1. That's good enough for me to take a chance on giving you +2

I'm not sure how you could provide trustworthy references via email, or other, because in reality any info provided could easily be fabricated.

Reference usually refer to past dealings. People you have bought and sold with. Im a business owner and from time to time get that question from new clients. It helps to give new customers a little more confidence to deal with you.

There's a feedback system in place here on the forum. Like you see for sellers on that big auction site.

There've been instances of folks scamming others by shipping them counterfeit knives, or just empty boxes and then disappearing into the wind. A non-issue as far as I'm concerned. If you only do business via PayPal G&S you don't have much to worry about.

I’ve had people concerned about both buying and selling contact me for reference. They just look at past feedback and contact a few members to ask how their respective transactions and before/after communication went between us. I’m always happy to help two members come together if I can.

The feedback system isn't fool proof, look at a persons post history, level of involvement in other areas besides the exchange, and don't ignore red flags. This thread belongs in the GB&U.

References? I would just let them figure it out on their own. If selling, you give money and I give product. Of course, I would have to up my membership level again to sell here. To this point, I have never bought or sold here. I wouldn't have any references that I would be willing to provide to a knife buyer.

I have never asked for references or been asked for mine. I was once contacted by a seller and asked how a transaction I did went(international buyer) and provided them with the info. They got my name through feedback I had left the buyer & the seller and I had done business in the past. If asked for references I would provide my feedback info and general info on trading activities else where. I then would ask them exactly what are they looking for. I would not provide them with names and Email addresses of those I had dealt with without 1st clearing it with those parties.

I’ve also been contacted by a couple of members asking about past transactions.
I knew them pretty well, so was glad to let them know how the deals went.
I was happy to help!
Joe
