Sometimes I envy you guys who live in bigger towns or nearer bigger towns then I remember all the people in those towns and open up eBay or amazon.

I don't live in the city. I drive 78 miles each way to work 5 days a week. Unless you consider that close.

No I don't. Did something similar for a few years and took a pay cut to work 10 miles from home when the opportunity came up.

I know what you mean, been doing this for 8 years but nothing worth a pay cut has opened up. Still trying but the one place around that would pay enough to take the pay cut still has too many old timers holding the positions. Soon hopefully though. Maybe a couple more years and something will happen. Working 8 and driving 4 more out the day is getting old, plus totally screws me out of hunting except the first 2 month of the season as I get home or leave way before/after dark.

Height guage and surface plate. You can buy GOOD (Starrett, Mitutoyo, etc.) used vernier height gauges on eBay for the same money as the crummy Chinese ones, and then you have a quality tool that you'll find a million other uses for. My surface plate/height gauge combo are among the most important tools in my shop. Lost without them.

I actually just ordered a Starrett 255 12" height gage for $100 with shipping form eBay. New from Starrett they are $1200. This one is older and comes with a wooden case, the new ones from Starrett don't have the wooden case included.
