Our sharpening shop is connected to our store by a door with another room between them. We usually leave the back door open at the shop for some fresh air. That's the only way I can explain how this must have happened...

There were three of us left, closing up. M, my friend who works with me; T, our store manager; and me. T locked the front door and we were going to leave the back way. I had Alice (my dog) with me on her leash. M walked through the door first as T and I were shutting off lights and stuff. Less than a minute later, he came back in and said, "Guys, there's a dog walking around in my workshop."

At that point, all the doors were closed and the lights off in the shop part. M's "workshop" is where he fixes slicing machines in between the store and the shop, but separated from the store.

Of course, we assumed he was hallucinating or something, so he held Alice while I walked back there. No dog. I wandered around and finally spotted it in the other room where we sharpen knives. It looked scared and I didn't know if it would bite, so I carefully squatted down and talked doggy-talk to it and called it over, and it came over to me pretty quickly, head down and tail tucked, a little damp from the rain outside, and very sweet.

M wanted me to just let her outside. I couldn't leave her like that outside our store on a busy road without any food or anything, and in the rain too... So I volunteered to take her to the shelter on my way home as long as she and Alice got along. I got a spare leash from my car and looped it around her neck and held her while M held Alice and they sniffed each other. They got along fine; they are both the submissive type, fortunately.

The animal shelter is open late on Fridays, so I drove by it on my way home (taking the "scenic route") but as I was driving there, I changed my mind. This has to be someone's dog. She willingly walked very politely on a leash, jumped right into my car, and even ran to my door when I got home. Yes, I took her home!

So now I have this dog. I called the animal shelter, my groomer, my vet, the radio station, the pet supplies store I go to, and the local police to see if anyone had reported her lost. No luck so far, but I left the info with all of them. I told the shelter I would keep her overnight and I might bring her in tomorrow. I'm going to see how things go with her overnight. Right now she is relaxing in Alice's crate (maybe she was crate-trained?) and Alice is outside. I thought she needed a little time alone because she was pretty nervous still, even though she warmed up to me and rolled over while I brushed her and let me brush her belly.

I hope I find her owner! I don't think I can keep her. Anyone want a free dog if I can't find the owner? I'm serious. I live in northeast PA and I will meet you half-way if you live close by. She kind of looks like a fat, long-haired fox, but with less white on her. She's mostly yellow/orange. She has a sweet, pretty face. But she also has that thick undercoat (kinda like a Chow) and I brushed her and got about three handfulls of hair off of her. Alice doesn't shed, so these two are like night and day! Anyway, anyone want a shy, sweet, pretty little dog?

I just thought it was funny about how she showed up at work. She must have knife-radar; that makes her cool already. ;)

Did you put an ad in your local paper? Also, there's a chance (perhaps small) that the owner had her microchip implanted for ID purposes. Ask your vet or maybe the shelter about this.

You`re just too kind hearted, taking in truckers and stray dogs. ;)
Take some pics of the poochie and lets see it.

If I don't hear anything by tomorrow, and I decide not to take her to the shelter, I will put an ad in the paper. The shelter will check for a microchip for me, even if I don't leave her there. I am friends with everyone at the animal shelter, so I know they will help me either find her owner or find a home for her.

dig-it, lol... My boss took "our" camera to a car show for the weekend, so no luck on the pic; sorry!

Many, if not most newspaper will print free found ads for you, as a public service. If you don't specifically ask, they might charge you.

Thanks. :) But they won't charge me anyway because I have some good friends at the paper too! ;)

Ashes, I wanted to give you "greenies" for being a kind human being towards a scared, lonely pooch, but I'm not allowed right now. You did a good thing taking her home. But, I hope you find her real home. They probably miss her a lot.

This morning while driving to work I found a little black kitten on the road just down the hill from my house. Her mother was there with her, but ran off when I came up on them. The kitten just stayed put. When I got out of the car to check on her, all she could do was go in circles. But, I snatched her up, thinking that she's definitely wounded or something and brought her home. Long story short. My wife ran her up to the vet this morning to check her out. The Vet said she'd probably been hit by a car and had a severe concussion. She died this afternoon. Some stories have a kind of sad ending. But, at least she didn't die on the road.

ADBF, thank you; I'd rather have read what you wrote than gotten chiclets anyway. ;) And I'm very sorry to hear about the kitten. It was very kind of you to try to save it. Sad story though. :(

You're OK in my book, Ashes! I've taken in 4 stray pooches in over the years and found out that if the owners really wanted their dog back... there would've been a collar & ID/license present. Hope your 'new' friend gets a good family to live with. :)

Very generous of you, Ashes. I have to spread the rep points around, but you earned a green in my book  :D

And she died without suffering as much as she would have. Thank you.

I can't give you greenies, yet, either. That is so cool. Too many people are ready to "get rid of" a stray, without trying to find their owner. Try some local convenience stores, see if they let you post signs. That may help get the word out. Talk to the local mail carrier. They see everything....

Thanks to you and everyone else for your support. I'm surprised no one has scolded me for bringing home a stray, lol. ;)

Update: Both dogs slept with me in my bedroom last night. Alice was in my bed of course, and Annie was on the floor. I woke up an hour or so later, and they were reversed! They are getting along fine, and Annie seemed less nervous this morning. She ate her food and went out with me and Alice and is now sleeping at my feet.

Oh, yeah... I nicknamed her... :o (The little orphan with red hair, lol. I would have named her "Sandy" but that's my neighbor's name, and my animals names all start with vowels. Some kind of OCD thing, lol.)

My first dog's name was Smoky, then came Pooch, then Heather, followed by Bonnie, then I figured to keep things easy, I'd just start at the front of the alphabet & work on out to 'Z'. Had Angus along with Bonnie; now Clyde shares in my life. I think the next one will be Dilbert. :D Best wishes to Annie!

God smiles upon those who are kind to stray animals :)

- I'd definately give you a chicklet for that but I don't think I can (?) - never figured out how to do that...?

Anyway, kudos to you Ashes!

James: If you look at Ashes post, there is a blue bar above it with the time and date. On that bar all the way to the right of the screen, there is a post number (like yours is #16) a picture of a balance scale and a red triangle with an exclamation point. If you click the scale, you will be able to agree (green chicklet) or disagree (red chicklet) and leave a message. Rep points are anonymous. The triangle/! button is to report a post to a moderator (to help out the mods if a post violates BFC rules).

In my neighborhood, people used to, some still do, leave their unwanted animals on the side of the road. I'll never forget the time I was out for a walk, and saw a van with a dog bouncing around in the back. Then I saw the van drive past me a couple minutes later, and a couple minutes after that, I came upon the dog sitting dumbfounded in the middle of the road. I would've taken it home, but it ran off into the woods, and I didn't have a phone to call the SPCA or animal control or the pound etc. Anyway, I wouldn't've been able to take it home, my dogs would have probably ate it (they got along with each other, but not other dogs).

I remember the other time that I came upon a yellow lab that I'd never seen in the area before, no collar etc, and she was bone thin. I gave her the water in my water bottle and my granola bar that I had brought along. She followed me for most of my walk, until she found something dead in the road and rolled over it and started gnawing on it.

About ten years ago, two of my dogs got out, and one was hit and severely injured by a car. The other was hit and had problems from it ever since. They had to put the one to sleep, and it was about a week til my father found the other one. During that time, our oldest dog died while in surgery to remove a tumor. A very sad time, but later on we got another dog, that loved to "roam", but cars, dogs and guns do not mix. He got out so many times I'm surprised he never got hit.

The dog I have now is a yellow lab purebred, a blockhead, and while I love him to pieces, is a real pain in the arse. This dog has been getting out ever since the neighbors up the street got a new dog, a girl. This dog is constantly on the "prowl". He used to just lay around, and I would have to physically have to stand him up just to go out to the bathroom in the morning(he can get up on his own, he just knows that I will either pick him up or drag him to the back door by his gruff).

There could be any number of reasons, maybe the owner didn't want the dog, but maybe it just got out. You did good to take it in, but keep your chin up if someone lays claim to it.

:( I was getting attached to her too.

If I could go back in time, I wouldn't have even reported her "found". I should have just kept her.

I took her in to the shelter this morning to see if she was microchipped. As soon as I walked in, a woman I know there said, "Oh, I see she's back again." Then another woman saw her and said that her owner had just called that morning asking about her, not long before I got there.

Since I know them all there, I grilled them about this person:

Why was the dog here before? (She wanders off.)

Why doesn't she have a collar on and why do they let her outside if she wanders off? (We don't know, but since she is healthy and well-fed, we can't really do anything about it.)

Do they treat her okay though? She is very nervous and lies down when anyone goes to pet her and she wouldn't let anyone but me near her when we found her. (We don't know. She is always very shy though, especially around men.)

Can I just take her home? (Sorry, but she's licensed and you can't steal the dog!)

Just don't tell. (We already told her you called.)

****. (not out loud.)

Okay, well, she ran away again... (*laughing* She'll be fine. Is this your collar and leash? *reaching for leash*)

Yeah, but I'm going to work now and they can pick her up there. It's closer for them anyway.

I wanted to meet the person who picked her up.

Apparently the owner is an old lady. Her son (fifty-ish?) came to get her shortly after I got to work. He saw her and said, "Hey, Princess." :barf: Princess?

He didn't seem happy to see her and she didn't seem happy to see him either. She did sort of walk over to him, but then she lay down in a very submissive position. He bent over, took off the collar, and picked her up. He didn't say anything to me.

So then there's me! "They said at the shelter she'd been there before because she wanders off when you let her out..." (Yeah, she's thirteen and getting kind of senile.) "So then why do you let her outside on her own without a collar or anything?" (We've always just done that.) "Well, she's going to either get hit by a car or something or someone is going to call the cops on you."

At that point, the girl I work with is like, "Ashes... it's his dog..." she's nervous because she thinks I'm losing my temper, even though I'm totally keeping my cool.

"I know, and that's why I went out of my way to get her back to him. (to him) Do you know that I called the shelter, vet, groomer, even the police to see if someone was missing her? The shelter said someone only called this morning."

This guy is just kinda looking at the floor, and I'm starting to feel a little bad.

"I'm not trying to be rude; I was just really worried about the dog. Please keep her inside or on a leash, okay? She's a sweet girl."

He was all sorta "yeah, okay..." and then he left. Not even a thank you.

Someone invent me a time machine. I don't care if she IS old and senile and I don't want another dog; I'd still keep her.
