Currently, I use a Lansky Turn Box ceramic sharpener (the version with both the medium and fine rods), and then strop on newspaper wrapped around the wood box of the Lansky unit, and I'm able to get knives shaving sharp with a bit of time and effort. I also own and am learning how to use a set of arkansas stones for rejuvenating older knives that don't take well to the ceramic rods. Sometime in the future, I'll probably end up picking up the Lansky guided system to round out my arsenal a bit and give myself some heavier re-profiling capacity.
I'd highly recommend the Lansky Turn Box to someone who is just starting out in the world of sharpening. For $10 most places, it's really not much of an investment, and it provides a sharpening experience that is similar to the Sharpmaker for a fraction of the cost. You are a bit limited in your sharpening angles and your grits, but as an entry level product, it is quite a performer.
