Knife sharpeners

I've noticed lately a vast increase of wanna be professional knife sharpeners on Facebook....(Some are legit) Some kid buys an edge pro or lansky and suddenly thinks they're now qualified professionals...Which that I'm not really hating on everyone started somewhere, but the thing that's irritating is I've called out atleast 5 different sharpening services so far after viewing pix they uploaded of they're supposed recent work. They're stealing pix from here and Google of super highly polished knives, and claiming it there own .

Had one guy swear up and down they were examples of his work when I called him out...until I posted links referring back to pix Josh @ REK had uploaded and a few other fellow forum members...(and he claimed he did it on a Smith's professional precision guided sharpener lmao)

Just a heads up if you plan on getting work done and aren't using one of the known services make sure your seeing examples of their actual work....if they have to steal someone elses pix to try getting business and aren't proud to display their own work then chances are your not gonna like the work performed.

Thanks for the info.. It would be nice if Bladeforums could watermark the picts. so they couldn't be used.

They basically searched mirror polished knives, bc the pix used are basically displayed on the first page of results..

Plus they post pix of a beautiful flawless mirror polish, knowing Damn well they can't reproduce those results.. So the customer basically gets a maybe sharp knife that may reflect a lil bit..and the one guy was charging $40 to mirror polish a blade up to 4" and was using the Smith guided sharpener to s supposedly accomplish it lmao...I had one of those before I started learning to sharpen. You ain't getting close to a mirror with it, or even bevels.

Here's one pick that was used by 3 of em, along with several other of this guys pix.

$40 is steeeeeep price tag! I would expect newer (less established) individuals to probably take pictures with their username & date in the picture, sort of like how some forum trades are conducted. Just so you know that for example, gusto5 @ 23/02/16 sharpened this knife. It's too bad people are misleading potential customers of their work, definitely not the way to start on the right foot.

Pretty much I saved links to the most common pix they use..and put em on blast the second I see it in the groups.

That's out right fraud and being a thief stealing a pic of somebody else's work and claiming it as your own.

That's crazy. Do they think that they will make more than 80$!?!? WTF ha ha. Dude, it's Facebook. The first two customers are going to slam you and you'll be done lol.

Thanks for posting this up Bobby, I just recently started watermarking a few of my pics and will sure to try and to all of them from now on hehe

edit:

Np I would hate to see someone shell out $40 on a single knife or more on multiple..bc at that price you would think your sending em to someone highly qualified to demand such a price only to be let down and possibly have your knife come back in worse condition than it left. If it even gets returned.

Wow three different guys using the same pic. Wonder what the customer thinks when he sends his knife in gets it back (if he gets it back) and it looks nothing like the pics these frauds advertise.

Not saying I approve of such practice, but I've never understood people who send off a knife just to have it sharpened

It's not like it's rocket-science or anything. I mean, if I can do it..

Some people want a highly refined polished edge for show purposes that they lack the skill our equipment to achieve, or just don't understand the principles of sharpening. For them it's easier to have someone else do the heavy work for them.

I've only sent 1 knife in to be sharpened, and that was my s110v pm2 that I got used and in need of a major reprofile. I didn't feel like messing with it and the time it'd taken me to reprofile that steel with the tools I had at hand so I had Josh do it for me.

Yea most of the pix came from the first 50 results when you Google mirror polished edge lol. Yea I can only imagine the level of disbelief opening your knife expecting to be able to use it as a mirror, and find it all jacked up.

One guy tried justifying it by saying that he was a legit sharpener, and he only used those images bc he couldn't get his pix to look as good. Then he sent me pix of his work, and the edges weren't even in the same ball park as the pictures he posted claiming he could do.

That's a disgrace. He's admitting he's a fraud and is fine with it :thumbdn:

uhg, some people are amazing! You're totally right and it's awesome of you to warn everyone to try and prevent fraud!

It's good though that as chopsaki said, after 1 or 2 knives they would be done from people blasting them on fb or ig, people aren't going to put up w/ that!

Yea, but it's fb...when people find out your trash, create a new profile and service name and your back at it for a few more.

This is a sad day.

I think getting the word out would be best, links to these frauds to pass on in professional networks, social and private, could be very helpful. I know a few Pro's that would be interested to know about this.

They've all been deleted up to this point...atleast the ones I've come across...the minute I post links to original images they stole they delete the post.

Just pass the word to maybe water mark any pix of highly refined edges they post.

Going forward I'll screen shot any I come across, but I mainly just wanted to give any one using such services a heads up to confirm the pix are actually there's...fb has tons of groups , and these were just from the 5 or 6 I'm a member of. Likely many more posers stealing pix that haven't been discovered yet.

No worries, I'll link this thread to a few friends.

I was kinda hoping my photo didn't make it but I see one did :(
