knife sharpeners

The spyderco setup looks very useful, and i hear great things about it.
But it's about $50...I may get one some day, but for now...

I have a Lansky Turnbox with medium and fine ceramic rods.
It's the same basic idea, a base, and rods mounted in a V shape...

It set up to do 20 and 25 degree edges. I have no trouble getting my knives shaving sharp. The kit is light, compact and cheap. I payed about $15.

I really can't reccomend it enough.

I LOVE my Sharpmaker. Been using one for about 10 years now. I bought the UF stones for mine and have no problems getting my RC-3 hair-whittling sharp.

I am going to take a look at the Lansky kit. It looks like a good kit and its not at much as spydercos.

i like razor edge guides.... nothing beats learning how to properly stone a knife free hand though.... right now im trying to get a propper grasp of stropping.

Landsky kit works great, easy to set up and work with. No need to spend a fortune if you don't want to.

YES!

I use a Sharpmaker then strop with black and green compound - my RC-3 take a WICKED edge and is one of my sharpest knives I have now - splitting hairs is easy...

Cant beat the Sharpmaker for ease of use, price and convenience.

just a stone and my hands and a leather strop
yes, my very first knife don't look very good, but they are still usable, I'd suggest trying on some cheap knife first ...

I use a Lansky and it seems to be hit or miss for me. Some things come out scary sharp and others feel duller than before. I have been looking at the sharpmaker, but can't justify it right now.

I have both a Lansky and a Spyderco Sharpmaker. Both are excellent sharpeners. The sharpmaker is a little more forgiving I think by once you get a good rythm on the Lanksy it just as good. I need improve my technique with a stone though. Easier to pack.
