Anyone have any experience with someone who does knife sharpening in the CT or Westchester county area?

I attempted to sharpen my short ka-bar and I'm pretty sure I've managed to mangle it pretty good.

First of all, welcome to Bladeforums. Second, the vast majority of people here will argue against contracting out your sharpening. Depending on what you used, that you think you "mangle[d] it pretty good", most people would suggest you buy yourself a Lansky/Gatco, or an Edge Pro if you have the scratch.

Well I've managed to get the middle very sharp, but the top and bottom are very dull. I tried the sharpie technique and the stone isn't hitting either of those spots.

Can I use the stone only on those parts or will that make the blade too uneven?

not that anyones reading this but i finally got an acceptable edge with a smith sharpener.

Yay for me.

Hey I'm reading! Glad to hear you are gaining on it. I myself use a Lansky guided rod type sharpener. It's worked well for me.

yea thats what the smith's is, i just couldn't get enough metal off with the sharpmaker

The sharpmaker is SLOOOOOW. When I want to hog off metal, I either lay a diamond hone up against the SM rod and go to town on that, or break out my Gatco (lansky-like) rig.

Most likely you need to get coarse rods for Sharpmaker. There is company in Naugatuck "Congress tool", they make variety of coarse stones, which fit into sharpmaker base. They are inexpensive, 6" long, and work well for me.
I am using sharpmaker for couple years, it is the $40 I ever spent.
