Knife Show Question

I’m in the NE US and I hope to make a 2019 vacation out of attending a high end knife show. From what I’ve read so far, it seems the two shows that have the biggest/best collections of knives are the Atlanta Blade Show and the Las Vegas Shot Show. The guns at LV mean very little to me. My interest is strictly the knives, and I can only afford to attend one of these shows.

Which of these two shows will have the most extensive collection of mid-tech and better knives?

Never been to Shot in Vegas, but from what I’ve read, Atlanta is the biggest show of the year. I went a couple years ago and it was amazing. Whichever one you choose, if you plan on buying, bring cash. Don’t worry, you’ll spend what you have and wish you’d brought more.

These are totally different shows. First SHOT is an industry specific show that's not for the general public. You'd need to have an invite to get in. And then, it's not a knife show. I have seen a couple custom makers there over the years, but not many. Mostly the companies exhibiting are major manufacturers, and the only focus is on current products for sale. That being said SHOT is also not a retail show. Sales do occur, but they are frowned on. Most makers don't bring products for sale but will sell product to their dealers/distributors/etc usually with shipment after the show. SHOT takes the entire Las Vegas convention center to hold, and it takes days to see it all. Blade is usually smaller than one section of SHOT. (SHOT could easily overflow the mall Blade is held in.)

Blade is a knife show. The occasional other product does get thru the door, but not much. Scale materials, grinding fixtures, steel and other metals, custom makers, engravers, etc; you'll find all of that at Blade. And manufacturers big and small will also be there with the latest products and the expectation of selling it all out before the show ends. Collectors too have their tables, with sales and displays. If you want to talk knives, this is the show.

Back when you could have SHOT, the Safari Club annual show, and the Las Vegas Gun Collectors shows all on the same weekend you could see more knives than at Blade. But you'd never see all those shows in 2 days, and now days SHOT is held in the middle of the week to limit Pedestrian traffic sneaking in as well as conforming to the work week for the exhibitors (who are working).

These are totally different shows.....
Many thanks for your insight. I could get into SHOT via my local gun dealer, but I thought it had a more substantive knife presence than is apparently the case. You just saved me a disappointing and probably costly LV trip. I can do the November NYCKS as a day trip, so that’ll be my budget shakedown cruise. After that, it’ll be a matter of saving and laying off knife buying for half a year to fund the Atlanta trek. Here’s hoping...

We knife makers would rather you buy knives all year than go to Blade in Atlanta.

Ahh yeah. There's also Blade Show West in Portland this year.

No. We are getting ready for our big upcoming show of the year Oct 19-21 in Santa Yanez Ca. Its the Brannaman Pro Am the worlds largest and richest ranch roping competition. Not only is it a great show for us as everybody there is our target market but we compete as well. Lots of work to do yet to get ready.

Blade Show is pretty much the largest knife event held in the US annually. Since I am local I go every year and my parents travel in from Louisiana to go also.

Bummer was hoping to see some of your work, I know that these types of shows are not real good sellers of your work but one can hope.

In all these years I've never even done a knife show. Heck I've only even ever been to one. Maybe some day.

I have never attended SHOT in Los Vegas. It really didn't appeal to me since it is mostly geared toward sales to dealers, distributors and so forth. I feel sure it is a lot of fun however, and yes there are knives. Knives however are not the focus of the show. The Los Vegas attractions generally don't appeal to me and hence the trip would not yield the enjoyment that I seek.

I would choose the BLADE show in Atlanta GA if I were in the NE US and only could attend one show that is geared toward knives almost exclusively. You won't see vendors with guns there. I have attended quite a few times and always enjoy it. I would make it a two day event if I were traveling any distance to the show.

Knife show coming up in Pigeon Forge TN over the weekend of Nov 3rd this year. I hear it's a good show. But it is certainly not the BLADE show. Fall color should be peaking in the Smoky Mts about then.
