I just sent an email to one of my friends from this forum saying how I was saving up my pennies for the only big knife show in my state, put on by the club I belong to (Wolverine Knife Collectors) and telling Larry how much I enjoy seeing the collections people bring and display, nothing for sale, just show. And I thought of LT and his great Schrades/Waldens, ect.

Hey LT! You ever display your knives at a show? I know that some shows actually charge for 'display only' tables, sometimes a little less than 'selling' tables, which is too bad. I think anyone offering to show off their wonderful collections (and give out scads of good information!) ought to be paid by the show for doing it.

We have a guy with a monstrous collection of Olsens (a Michigan brand) and I always enjoy him. Also a wonderful little old lady that brings her collection of mini-folders. I never new you could make a knife handle out of a squirrrel bone. And there is always a great display of Case peanuts, including some very clever fakes and counterfeits.

I have done shows for Schrade in Penn and NY they ( Schrade) also often sends there questions on older knives especially automatics to me. I never really did shows for myself, however I will be starting to do some, beginning in March ( only to pass the time. ) Getting ready has given me something to do. I am tied up in several projects including a knife museum in Walden. It involves several aspects however the museum itself is a reality in that all the funding, the building ect are all there and only the final changes alarms, security, and construction are finishing up. It has been a dream all my life. However now that it is a reality I no longer have the desire I did. the role I play in it will depend on what fate has in store for me. Frankly I no longer care. There I go being upbeat again. ( a joke ) well anyway it is the truth. I have a few Olsens and do enjoy going to shows. I would truly enjoy doing displays on old domestic autos however the laws on these artifacts unlike any other object were written in a nebulus manner to be interpreted by individuals and agencys to allow there enforcment unequally and upon whim. This is why I did my CD which is a virtual museum tour. I have also spoken and lectured on this subject and the history surrounding it. However I do not take my automatic displays for fear of placing them in jepardy of anyone who decides that they constitute the violation of any laws. It is strange that this item is the only one in which constitutional first amendment and free speech rights are continualy violated and it is gotten away with. Take away a shotgun, child pornography, or anything else and someone crys foul in the name of individual rights. However carry a 3,3/4" 100 year old Schrade double into New Jersey and it could be a felony. The part that bothers me is that this history is being lost because of this stupidity. People made these items and there contributions should be allowed to be recognized. They fed there familys and came to this country for the wages this labor produced. Many later generations made contributions to this country because of this opportunity. How many lives were saved by the use of the orange para automatic survival knife adopted by the US military ( Made by Schrade ) or the presto commando among others. While you can take with proper paper work a 30 caliber automatic machine gun from the same era and display it all over the country. Not so those knives they are forever ( upon interpretation ) illegal. Of course you can take out the 60 year old piece of steel which is the spring and then it becomes perfectly fine. What bullshit. I am attaching a pic of my CD which I released on July 4 2003 I used that day since it represented independence and was a statement upon the right to view and learn the history of this segment of the past. Right now this is as close to an automatic knife museum as you will get. The picture on the CD is a 9 panel display with around 12 dozen automatic knives with examples from the 17 hundreds until 1958, when the laws against these items made them pariahs. LT

I bought this CD a while ago and love it. The color pictures and the descriptions sure have helped this newbie in identifing possible "finds" (found a old Sur-Snap in a pile of junk)

I can't wait till LT starts doing a show or two. Im only a few hours drive away and will be sure to be there early.

Please do it soon and be sure to let us know the details.

Thanks,
Larry

Tex;

You may be interested to know that most of the Olsen pocket knives were made by Schrade.

There were also some made in Solingen.

Yep, damn shame, LT you cannot take your auto collection on the road, but you would end up getting them confiscationed sooner or later. I know you would in my state.

Funny thing about weapons laws... in my home state here, I can carry my snubbie .38 into the local courthouse 'cause I have a CPL. However, I must surrender my medium sized pearl handled toothpick knife. And an auto knife would get me arrested. So this isn't a 'funny thing' at all, is it? It's rather stupid. As LT points out, we're being cheated out of being able to see, and easily own, a classic American product.

Hey LT! Can you tell me about the Schrade / Olsen connection?

Phil

I am afraid that I do not know much about any connection except to say that a Schrade knife under another tang is never a surprise over the years Schrade made them for just about everyone, the contract end of the business sustained them for most of there history. Sorry I cannot add any info. However I will keep it in mind to reference. LT.

Phil,

Is that the show in Novi, coming up this April? I have wanted to go to that one for a few years now, but can never seem to get the time to go up. It's only a three or four hour drive for me (from the Fort Wayne area). I think I'm gonna go this year, unless I end up going to North Carolina for a camping trip that's coming up around the same time. Camping, knife show, which to choose???

Yep. That's the one, Steve. In past years it's been in January. Uhhh.. it's a little close to Detroit, and I wouldn't recommend camping there. North Carolina is beautiful. Choices!
