knife size for office use

Now that I'm on disability I don't have to worry about carrying small, not that I ever did anyway! My "office" is my living room and I set the carry policy so the bigger the better. Switching between my LionSteel SR-1 Raindrop Damascus, ZT0801, and the big boy today, ZT0600. I love my new office policy!

My office is very laid back but we do not have John Q Public coming in to our space. I carry a ZT 0350 most of the time but do carry a Scallion or Leek when out around public people. My business partner carries an 0700 or an Izula most of the time. Both of us have our CCW so we are also alway carrying a Glock! Guess it really depends where you work. I find it funny that the Lowes Hardware in my home town does not allow employees to carry any kind of knife. Only Box Cutters.

I think it depends A LOT on where you work. For most office jobs, there is no reason to carry a ZT knife. It is too large and would just attract the wrong type of attention. All of my work tasks, from opening an occasional box to slicing lunch, can be completed just fine with a mnandi or similar sized knife. I keep my work carry to under 3", and mix it up with traditionals and modern folders.

I work at a Private Boarding School in New England / Security. I used to carry a SigTac Pterodactyl, until I deployed it to help cut some string stuff...room went QUIET. Toned it down to a Kersahw Blur :D Office Setting? Can't go wrong with a SAK.

OP - I work for a tech company in Carrollton...I usually carry a Leek, as small as an AG Russell Ti 3.0 lock back, a ZT 560...and as much as a 5.5 HTM Maxx. No one cares so long as you aren't flashy and exercise a modicum of common sense.

God bless Texas!

I carry a medium sized Case or GEC slipjoint, or a Victorinox Alox Electrician in my pocket. They never seem to raise any eyebrows. but I'm still discreet about using whichever one i have along. It stays in my pocket unless I am using it, then goes back in when I'm done. Most work it gets is when I'm slicing an apple at my desk, or opening shipping cartons, neither of which are exactly spectator sports.

I usually carry only smaller knives at the office. Or, like today, I'm carrying a para 2, but also brought a dragonfly in case someone asks me for a knife, as to not freak them out.

I would feel more comfortable pulling out the dragonfly. That would probably only result in a "Whoa! You're carrying a knife. Who are you going to kill? ... let me borrow it.", while the para 2 probably would cause a "Holy fruitloops! What is that thing?!".

But it doesn't really matter much, since people here are very afraid of knives for some reason and think that you're "armed" if you carry a ladybug. The only socially acceptable knife to carry is a SAK -- barely. You could get into trouble, though, if you carry a too big knife that might not be considered a "normal pocket knife", but that's a legal issue.

The OP carried a ZT 0561 to the office on Monday and Tuesday. Today he's carrying a Benchmade 581 Barrage. I've carried each of them numerous times with no comments, but then I'm usually sitting alone at my desk when I start slicing banana's and apples.

For years I carried my SOG mini X-RAY Vision with me in my slacks to work. I've kinda retired it simply because its really old, been sharpened so many times, and is a heavy knife for its size. Benchmade 530 replaced it. I have my own private office at work so its not a big deal that I carry a knife. If the United Socialist State of Illinois ever makes a decision on the CCW law, I'll be carrying a well concealed gun to work as well.

They havnt made a decision yet? I thought the judge said they had to do it by last june.

Wasn't that his point though? That you don't need a ZT for slicing bananas and opening office supply orders?

If a ZT is fine for your office, then great. It's too much for my office though... depends on where you work is right.

3 inches us just more than enough blade than I'll ever need in daily life. When outdoors it's nice to have something bigger. But in the office? I actually only have one edc that's longer than that.

I work in an office too and my edc is something with a 3.25-3.5 inch blade and a 4.5-4.75 handle.

I've never had anyone make any comments but I also live in a very knife friendly state and I think that has a lot to do with it.

If there are minimal to no knife laws, people get used to seeing them more often and of course the opposite of that for very restrictive states. Just my opinion, I've never had anyone say something in NH but they do over the border in MA.

Yeah it's funny, I go up to New Hampshire and I carry a knife everywhere I go and I'm not the only one. Sometimes I just have it on my belt when I'm hiking or camping and then forget about it when I'm walking around in town. But I go down to Massachusetts where I live and I don' carry a knife barely anywhere unless I'm fishing or something.

haha yep! Live Free or Die!

Yeah I'm always mindful of what I tote with me if I know I'm going to MA for the day, but being as i"m only 20 mins away from the border I may go without planning on it. If that's the case I usually unclip whatever it is and slide it all the way in my pocket.

I had a friend who was stopped in Boston after the cop saw a pocket clip and confiscated his blade because it was over the state limit, which I think is still 3 inches??

It's as Concat said. It depends on the office environment in question. When traveling from one to another, I carry a SAK. When at the home office I carry a Caly3 on a daily basis. Good enough for anything I have to cut. (My backup is a Sig...)
