Knife sketches...let me know what you think about 'em!

i like the second one the best. the tip might not be pratical though( too thin).

I know, it's supposed to be a fighting knife design and I think that sharpness is more important than sturdiness in a defensive knife's tip.

But I already modified the blade to give it an "upswept drop point tanto" shape (I have many more designs on my hard drive), I'll post that picture tomorrow.

No, but I think I'll send some of them to a custom maker and have them made.

Purely cosmetic.

Hey QS..

Pretty cool..

Like the top one the best,, but Really like the handles on Both of them...

Keep in mind that when you design knives, if you plan on the knife being used,, that it needs to be housed in something,, either leather or Kydex...

The second design is nice,, and would make a beautiful display piece,, even a user,, however it is such designs that make us Sheath makers die prematurely....

Good stuff though...

Hm, doesn't seem to be working anymore because I logged on at Yahoo again... :(

But you should be able to follow this link to view them - please let me know if that works.

Very nice designs. You could make the tanto point a little sturdier by making the chisel edge a little steeper (start it a little further down the blade).

Neither did anything for me. Too specialized designs and I'm not a fan of recurves.

I really like that third blade shape. It looks like something the could hold the thickness to stay strong, but still ground enough to get very sharp. Those sheath makes may have a little better time with that one too.

Keep up the good work, those are some nice looking knives. Let us know if you find someone to make them, there may be a good market here to sell off a few. lol

Neat, but are they functional? I'll post some of my drawings, but not many of them are really usable in day to day functions.

They look neat, in a fantasy knife kind of way. Honestly they don't seem very practical to me, too much going on. I find beauty in functionality.

What's so unfunctional about them as far as self-defense is concerned?

You sound a little bit defensive yourself, I like the drawings, I stated that I thought they were neat in my post. To me, they have a fantasy look. I have drawings of the same type of blades in my sketchbooks, and I honestly don't think they would work under stress. Good for shelf pieces? Of course. Good for self defense, EDC, survival knife, I don't know. Maybe that could be answered by the guys who hang out in the Tactics thread. The knives do not look sturdy enough for self defense, but then again, I don't know what materials you are using, your level of expertise making knives etc. By no means am I an expert, just my honest opinion. Please, don't take offense from my comments, you asked for opinions. I do like the designs, just asking if they would be functional as using knives.

I don't think a simple question can imply anything like that. I honestly would like to know why you think that they would be impractical for their intended purpose.
They have acute tips, secure handles and substantial guards.

I'm not a knifemaker.
Sturdiness is debatable. Some people think that Striders are great fighters, but I prefer thinner knives with sharper tips. IMO, sharpened prybars are more suitable for wilderness cutting/chopping/prying/digging chores. YMMV.

I would want the one with the upswept tanto blade shape with a thickness of about 1/8", maybe a bit less, probably made of carbon steel (52100 or something), so I think it would be plenty tough - with a fine point.

No offense taken. :)

I can easliy see those knives being touted as "The Next Big Thing from The Home Shopping Network"!!! :p

j/k...nice designs. #3 works for me. :)

Have you taken a self defense course, or spoken to any self defense instructors? Ask them about what type of knives they use. I may be wrong in my assumptions. From sight alone, they look like they would either break inside someone after stabbing or slicing that person. Maybe they just remind me of Jim Frost company fantasy knives, and subconciously I think that they wouldn't perform. I'm going to research this and get back to you so that I don't stick my foot in my mouth.
