Knife sketches...let me know what you think about 'em!

Have you taken a self defense course, or spoken to any self defense instructors?

I am by no means an expert, but I know a thing or two about edged weapons combat.
As I said, some people like thick, extremely sturdy blades for SD, others (like me) prefer thin, well-balanced blades.

Ask them about what type of knives they use. I may be wrong in my assumptions.

As far as that thin tanto tip is concerned, take a look at Persian fighters, Don Lozier's for example. Or how about some sub-hilt fighters? Many of them have similarly fine tips.

Wow, you have enough designs to start your own blade company. I do think the handle is a little too thin at the finger cutout on the Jungle Exlplorer.

I like the Gator and really like the Claymore. I think the Jungle Explorer handle is going to break that the top of that radius at the first hard use. It needs a bit more section there to be a hard use blade, IMHO.

Good job, Herr QS!

You've got a point here. The grip problems could be eliminated by making the scales thick around the cutout area.
This would also reduce the risk of breakage. G-10 or Micarta aren't steel, but they're quite tough.

Looks like frost cutlery. With a little UC influence? The claymore looks very familiar- maybe a tamed down hibben design?

Hey Guys..

I think a lot of these designs with some tweaking could be brought to life for sure...

I don't get the sense that they are influenced by Frost or UC at all..

Other than the two Tantos,, everythingl ooks pretty normal..

As far as fighting knives go.. What is a fighter to one person, may not be to another.. Different people have ideas what a fighter should be.. some people want a long bladed fighter,, others want something small,, compact and quick..

The Blizzard, Claymore, Rodent, and Jungle Explorer, with a little work on pin placement and refining are solid designs,, just as solid as anything made by any company anywhere...

I think what we need here is a little critique, some ideas on tweaking and some encouragement to someone who obviously loves blades of all shapes and styles..

Who knows what may come of it...
A new forum knife that everyone has had their input on...?!

Now that I've started making knives(If thats what you want to call it) I'am starting to see where my designs have flaws in them, and where they need to be adjusted and refined..It's one thing on paper,, but when you start cutting it out,,and grinding it,, you find where those flaws are..

I say keep drawing and refining those designs..

So you think that they look like Frost/UC designs, fine. But the Claymore? Large double-edged fixed blades don't get much more basic than that. Care to elaborate?

From your newest designs, I really like the Claymore, Rodent, Gator and Jungle Explorer, and really feel that they would perform. Count me in for one of these if they are made :D.

Thanks guys, your feedback is very helpful and encouraging. I didn't post them in order get a few pats on my back, although I admit that I'm sure glad that some of you seem to like those designs.

I would like to ask those who criticize these sketches to be a little more specific.

"I think this is the worst knife design I've ever seen in my whole life because of
a)
b)
c)"
That's constructive criticism and I appreciate it. I will keep in mind that the area around choil on the Jungle Explorer is too thin, for example.

On the other hand, "they look like crappy fantasy knives" is not very helpful at all.

Still looking for more indepth information on fighting knives, but from my knowledge, I really like the design on the Claymore the best. The handles look like they would be sturdy if they were constructed correctly, and I like the blade shape. Looks very capable, I would use it as a survival knife or camp knife. Depending on the materials used, I think it would serve any purpose, and if you made it, it would be the flagship of your company, except for the blue scales. Maybe either black scales, or wooden scales.

As for the Rodent, good neck knife, if that's what you want for it, looks durable, the choil looks too deep, but I'm not holding it in my hands. I would lose the embellishments, and go with a darker colored handle. Maybe good for an EDC fixed blade.

I see the Gator as a big hunting knife, no real value in skinning, but could be a good camp/hunter knife. I'd like to see a longer guard, but I think it looks pretty much okay. Would I use it? Would probably be too big for me, but I still like the design.

I really like the Jungle Explorer, but the handle looks way too thin near the blade, and looks like it will break if used for anything other than cutting string. I would go darker on the handle color, and would keep the basic blade design.

Now, keep in mind that I am pretty much new to the in depth world of knives, so my ideas may be wrong. But, I have learned a lot here, and my ideas may be more right than I give myself credit. The knives mentioned above have good design, slight variations from designs that are established and work, and have a lot of potential IMHO if you get them made. Good luck.

Nice designs! Certainly a lot of different pieces there! May I suggest that you make wooden profiles of some of your handle designs now? Helps show if what your pen came upo with (or pixels in this case) works in the hand.

Claymor ei sprobably my favorite, looks like blade and handle are a nice shape to me. I like the jungle explorer blade, though that finger choil looks a tad large to me! Nice work on the baron, that looks very nice as well.
