Knife Smelling

ROFL..

Uh..it's metal n plastic, dude.. if you want to smell something, maybe buy some chocolates...I'm sure they would be less expensive and taste better.

I've never actually put my nose that close to a knife. Not real fond of sharp things near my face. :)

This is copied from a post about a year or so ago by me:

Stupid knifemaker tricks

Good grief I'm stupid. I finished a knife and sheath for a buddys birthday. I noticed a little fog of moisture in the blade about an hour before I was due to go give him the knife. So what ingenious thing do I do you might ask?

I decide to put the sheath in the microwave for a couple min. I'm doing a little polishing with some flitz and I hear a sizzling sound. OH Crap, I exclaimed as I rush to open the nuclear reactor. As the fog cleared i see what appears to be some sort of fried pork skin has been placed in the microwave where my sheath once resided. But all was not lost!!!!

I quickly forced the knife into the sheath and formed the leather around the blade. I tossed the thing into the freezer to cool it and my smoking fingers. Deb came into the kitchen to see why I was chugging on a bottle of cheap bourbon. I pulled it out of the freezer to show her and she said that she liked it even better now. I looked at it for a minute and decided that I did too. It now had a nice wrinkled finish and was beautifully molded to the blade. I decided that the leather now was what I would now call my "Elephant scrotum" style sheath

I gave the knife to my buddy and told him what had happened. he took the knife to work to show all his co-workers and the all loved it.he told them all that it was in fact elephant scrotum. A rather goofy fellow that came into the room a little late for the description asked to see the knife........ The first thing he did was put the knife and sheath up to his nose and takes a big whiff and says " Boy that smells good". Needless to say this fellow will never have a normal life again until he finds differant employment.

I got sick from inhaling fumes that were given off when I Flame Anodized my BM31s... since then I don't really like smelling them that much and the ANO color (i still love the look) turns my stomach a bit.

Micarta has an odor. I'm not sure I like it, but it doesn't bother me either.

Well, I kinda like the smell of Tuff-glide. Kinda like "man-cologne".
Just for clarification, other "man-colognes":
gunpowder smoke
Rem-oil
WD-40
leather/mink-oil
Filson's waxed tin-cloth and shelter-cloth
Wool
and according to my wife's goofy cousin.... catfish bait!

I agree with Mongo, I don't go sniffing my knives, although I guess that would be about the ultimate expression of the "knife fetish", but I do like the smell of fresh Tuff - Cloth after it's been wiped on a blade.
Lagarto

Tuff-glide's the one lube who's smell I can't stand!!! I hate tuff-glide's odor.

Now Militec-1, that's a nice one. A dab on my neck under each ear just before a night on the town and I'm good to go :D :D

WHAT? You mean that old Indian was wrong, when he told me that he could tell if my knife was going to hold an edge or not, just by smelling the blade?

:D

I once had a funky smelling Spyderco Viele knife. I don't know if it was the micarta, or the oil used on the knife, but I didn't really find the smell unpleasant, just weird.

I actually do occasionally sniff my LCC D/A. I keep it lubed with WD-40 on occasion, and I don't know if it's the bronze washers, or what, I just get a really metalic tangy smell from the knife. Call me weird, if you want, that's just what I know.

Old (50+ years) carbon steel blades sometimes have a very distinct smell that I find to be enjoyable.

I smell my knives to I'm partial to 5160 and other high carbon steels, stainless dosen't have a smell to me.
Peace
Bob

The Steel Dust from My LST after a few hours of reprofiling. Cheap metal smell, kinda like bus poles

I like the liquid wrench smell. I also like the fresh concrete smell. And the blood smell.

I guess that makes me a pretty sick puppy, but at least I won't be totally miserable having my face mashing into the floor while someone holds a folder to my throat...

Well, there's that much-discussed "Strider Smell" - :barf:

But seriously, my favorite "smelly" knife is my El Camino Tactical, with Thuya Burl handle, from Terry Primos.

Hmmmmm, good!

(If you're around Terry, what IS that aroma?)
