A friend and I were at the forge early this morning and had a discussion about how we would make a knife that would double as a survival spear point. This is what we came up with: a handle that could be wrapped with para cord or leather lacing when used as a knife and when a need arose the wrap could be used to lash the knife to a pole for a spear. We are looking for opinions and wonder if there is anyone out there that would be interested in buying this.

Forged from 1/4 inch 5160
Hollow ground
Scotch-Bright finish on the grind, hammer marks on the flats
Overall length: 10 inches
I have not made a scabbard yet but would rivet something to the buyers specs (belt loop? deep pouch? etc.)

$100---- SOLD----delivered to the US or Canada. My PayPal account is gldrewknives@yahoo.com USPS money orders and checks that clear also accepted.

That is really cool and useful looking. It reminds me of the paleolithic stone daggers that I have seen.

Sick. I'd definitely prefer a convex grind over hollow for a spearpoint though, even if slicing ability were reduced. I'd probably want a false edge as well, so I could baton with the thing.

I do like this and am intriged, I would think a hole thru the middle near the top (prior ot the blade) would help in makeing it more secure. I agree with the previous post, a convex grind would be more stout.

Maybe a double hole |() ()| if that idea come across will make lashing very secure.

Thanks for the comments guys. I could still anneal the handle and drill a couple of holes (1/4 inch?) for an easier wrap and lash. The blade has not been sharpened yet so I could just sharpen the end 1/3 or so on one side of the blade to work with a baton. I hollow ground this one so that I could easily get a nice sharp grind line down the middle of the blade. This would be very difficult for me to accomplish on a convex grind.

If I had money I would buy it. Definetely needs holes in the handle. I would actually have you put micarta handles on it and use flared tubing to attach the handle that way you could still have a way to lash it to a pole but have a comfortable grip for everyday cutting chores. I'm not a fan of cord wrapped handles.

OK, here are some holes and a picture of a quick leather wrap. Thanks for the feedback guys.

That has lots of possibilities. The tubes with micarta or G10 or Paracord-all would work.
I have one spear point but one can never have too many weapons or tools.:D

I like it but a point many of us may run into: While it is legal to "own" a double edged "knife" in Virginia. It is illegal to have one on your possession in public. Since this functions as either, could get us in hot water.

Gerry, I'll take it but I want to discuss some changes or additions. It may change the price but that's OK. I'll email you with discussion.

I have a "concealed weapons" permit not just a "pistol" permit. Big difference in practice if you carry knives. "Bowie knives and Dirks" are illegal by specific statute to carry in Florida. Sportsmans Guide will not ship a knife labled "Bowie" in their catalog to Florida.
Makes no sense. Law is a holdover from the 19th century.

Hi Gerry:

I like it. With the holes drilled it is really a practical tool. I'd like to see further versions of this. Are you open to producing more of these at this price?

I like what you did with the holes, added some utility. I hope there are more of these in the works as I would be interested as well

How about the addition of a small guard or "lugs" just before the grip? It would alow better lashing to the spear pole.

I agree about the lugs. It woul keep from sliding forward onto the blade from the shank if you had to stab using it as a knife. This one can be adapted though. I'm confident.

I think it looks great, and functional... I think it would be nice to have the "Lugs" at the base of the blade (Top of handle) for when used with fish, you may not be throwing the spear just thrusting at large fish. the Lugs would keep the fish on the spear and allow you to retrieve the fish without having to wade into the water. I hope this makes sense?

Edit: To add Crude Photoshop Photo. Lugs should probably be a bit bigger than I made in the photo... but you get the Idea
