Knife spotting in war coverage

American and British warriors are getting the job done in Iraq with courage and skill. I know they are not there for our entertainment, but it is interesting to me as a knife collector and former soldier to see how they have choosen to equip themselves. I have been watching the news coverage and finally got a glimpse of a knife today. A US paratrooper was using a knife to do something to his weapon. (The reporter's commentary implied that the soldier was cleaning mud out of his weapon but this seems farfetched). The knife looked like a folder with a distinctive handle. I am going to guess Strider SnG. It was only a fleeting shot, so I'd like other opinions if you see the same clip on CNN. Has anyone else spotted knives being used by the troops?

[Edited for typos]

Saw one clip of a troop making some kind of adjustment on a mortar with a tactical looking fixed blade, 4-5" tanto.

I saw one remove a fixed blade from his chest to cut something. The sheath was an inverted kydex vertical sheath. It looked to be about the size of a Gryphon M10.

The shot of the paratrooper using a knife to clean some mud out of the crevices looked more like a Bob T. design if custom or possibly a production knife. I caught the general outline, but could see enough of the detail. Good shot though.

Twice now I have seen the same squad commander speak to the news crew and he has a Busse NO upside dow carry on his LBE.

Sort of feels strange having the same interests as a hero. Dont you think?

BTW Rev.Pete, dont forget the Aussies havin a play in the sand...;)

I saw a clip about the Navy Seals before they secured a couple oil fields. One of the guys was sharpening the edge of an interesting fixed blade combat knife (about 5") with a leatherman multi tool's file. I think it wasa leatherman based on the profile of the file but the handles were black. I though that was interesting.

There was an interesting clip on Fox News of a soldier using a knife to cut down a large picture of Saddam just after troops took one of the port cities in the south (Um Qasr?) Knife was not identifiable though.

In Time magazine, there's a shot of a special forces guy with a large bowie type knife on his belt behind his right hip. It was in a brown leather sheath, brass guard, and a stag handle. The stag looked kinda reddish with a fine texture like European stag, so I'm guessing it was a Muella or some European made knife.

Leatherman made a black version of the Supertool, I have one.

www.knifecenter.com still has some, according to their site.

There was some footage during the first or second day of the war of 5-6 guys grouped around looking at each others knives. One was a KaBar USMC and another guy who seemed rather proud of his but I couldn't quite make it out - contoured black handled large fixed blade.

Thanks for passing that along. I was wondering about that. Now all Leatherman has to do is make a black version of the WAVE! Now that would be cool. Is your supertool still stainless?

Mustang- I've got a black coated Supertool as well, and yes, it is stainless. The coating is quite durable; I've had mine for years, and the the coating still looks great, even after hard use.
