Knife Stand Project

Hi all,
Thought I'd share a project I have been working on. I wanted to make a knife stand so that I could display my Fiddlebacks when not in use. I went through about 5 different designs until I got to one that was not embarrassing. I started with my runt since it is smaller and quicker to iterate on new designs. This design should work for most 3"knives, but I will work now to scale it up to larger knives.

The stand is lasercut 1/8" solid wood, the cross brace has a laser engraved spider logo. The handle rests on a support, but the blade is held in place by a rare earth neodymium magnet so that it "floats" and attaches securely to the stand. The whole knife is tilted back at 10 degrees so it looks good from a higher perspective. I made three different versions, this one is solid cherry, finished in Howard's Feed-n-wax (like Fiddlebacks).

I made another version out of solid ash. This one is holding a bushnub - it still works but would probably look better on a larger stand with thicker wood.

Just for fun, I made one last version out of solid wenge, with an ash cross brace. In the cross brace I reduced the size of the logo and cut the image all the way through instead of engraving. This turned out to be my favorite. Unfortunately, I don't yet have enough small fiddlebacks to populate them all.

Very unique and eye catching design. I LIKE IT!

Get yourself a vendor subscription and start selling them.

Really cool project! Everyone here is going to want 2 or 3 or a dozen or in Bud's case something like 100 :p

Ha! .. I dont have that kind of shelf space. I would like to get a few of those - depending on price point/etc - but I do not want him to violate this forum's rules concerning a 'makers' subscription. The moderators here can be EXTREMELY mean with their levels of enforcement. You can not even give away items if you're the maker without first paying for a maker's subscription here .. guess how I know.

I would definitely be in for a few if you decided to make them for sale. Great work [emoji106]

Very cool. Is there a way to secure the knife to the stand for display?

The magnet is N52, which is the highest grade of Neodymium. The 1/2" diameter x 1/4" thick one that I use has 13.5 lbs of pull force. Even with the 1/8" separation from the blade it's still overkill, but I like it that way. If you lift the knife when attached the whole stand will come up.

Thanks all for the encouragement! I'm not really set up for production, and the day job is keeping me busy, but I'll see what I can do.
