Hi all,
Thought I'd share a project I have been working on. I wanted to make a knife stand so that I could display my Fiddlebacks when not in use. I went through about 5 different designs until I got to one that was not embarrassing. I started with my runt since it is smaller and quicker to iterate on new designs. This design should work for most 3"knives, but I will work now to scale it up to larger knives.
The stand is lasercut 1/8" solid wood, the cross brace has a laser engraved spider logo. The handle rests on a support, but the blade is held in place by a rare earth neodymium magnet so that it "floats" and attaches securely to the stand. The whole knife is tilted back at 10 degrees so it looks good from a higher perspective. I made three different versions, this one is solid cherry, finished in Howard's Feed-n-wax (like Fiddlebacks).
I made another version out of solid ash. This one is holding a bushnub - it still works but would probably look better on a larger stand with thicker wood.
Just for fun, I made one last version out of solid wenge, with an ash cross brace. In the cross brace I reduced the size of the logo and cut the image all the way through instead of engraving. This turned out to be my favorite. Unfortunately, I don't yet have enough small fiddlebacks to populate them all.
