Knife steel for fresh water canoeing

JJ20198, pretty much has you covered all of his recommendations should work just fine, but like Lycosa said if you can afford one I'd get a Mission Ti folder or fixed. I've got five, 3 folders and 2 fixed, don't carry, use or own anything else. Until you get one, carry one, and use one you just don't appreicate what NO RUST EVER or essentially near zero maintenace means. The knives are bomb proof and virtually industructable, sure I can't cut through 10 penny nails with folder but who needs to do that kinda thing anyway?

I've use a Benchmade Outbounder (440C) for a kayaking/fishing knife for about 3 years now and have had zero problems with rust. Very handy little knife.

I have been a kayaker for years.... I carry one stainless on my body. Another double zipped-loccked bagged in the storage... been there for weeks sometines... no rust on either. I use my EDC regular.. daily.. so what rust problem is there going to be.

I like this style of knife, but I am concerned about the water making the wooden grip slippery and ruining the leather.

My CRK Aviator (A2 tool steel but with a coating of KG Gun-Kote) gets pretty wet on canoe/kayak trips but the edge shines up real easy with just a bit of ultrafine sandpaper, and the Gun-Kote protects the rest. Probably my favourite small outdoors knife I've ever owned, for 4-season hunting, fishing, camping, climbing and hiking.

Actually a lot of CRK's fixed blades look like they're coated, highly recommended.
