I'm new to the forum and I'm making my first knife. I'm tight on money and only need 8in. of 154cm.
I found a Canada Co. that sells by the inch, but can't ship to the U.S.
Does anyone know of a supplier that will sell less than 18 in. ?

I'd start with an old file. The heat treatment is more forgiving.

It's your first knife. Go easy ;)

Grab 3 files for $5-10 at a flea market, keep your very first one as a trophy all the other two of them to friends for $20 per to fund your 154cm.

In regards to buying per inch in the U.S., I am not familiar with any places that do so.
Possibly call NJ Steel Baron and ask over the phone, he may be willing to work with you.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Unfortunately I am not familiar with anyone who sells by the inch either. Sorry I can't chime in with more productive information, but I would say that NJBillK is right that you might try NJ Steel Baron.

I have had to purchase stock of several steels, and would love to know about someone who would be willing to sell if by the inch, so if you do find someone who will be able to do it, please let us know.
Purchasing full bars is way too much for someone like me who only does it for testing and can't make knifes for sale at all.

Yeah, it's too bad companies don't do that here. The Canada company is Canadian Knifemaker Ltd. ----she told me she would love to sell to the U.S. but can't because of insurance reasons-----bummer.
