Hey guys, i have been considering making a storage box, but i am not quite sure what type i want to make...

i'm considering a few types

this would be the general idea, i already have a machinist box but i use it for tool storage
i would make large drawers like the one bottom, it would probably be 16" - 18" wide, not sure how tall the box would be.

my second idea was i could get an air tight box/trunk like the one below, and make myself some stacking drop in shelves with dividers

what do you guys use for knife storage?
do you put silica gal packs or canisters in with the knives to take moisture out of the box? obviously you would oil the knifes for storage

thanks in advance!

What is the objective of the box? To store the most knives in the smallest space without compromising safety and preventing any damage to the knives? Or is it more important that you be able to double the function as a display for the knives as well?

If the number of knives takes precedence over the displayability you could use a bin type container that has an insert with a number of varying sized slots like a butcher block (only not made of wood, and certainly not a single solid piece.

If displaying the knives is a primary function, I'd go with the top type with several sliding drawers.

It would be mostly to store the knives to prevent damage, maybe later on i will make a display box, for now i want something not super heavy so i can easily and safely take them with me

Whenever i tell people i've started making knifes they ask to see them and all i have is bad cell phone pictures to show them, they don't really do them justice

the air tight box seems like a good size, it will latch, it has 4 spots to put a lock.

these are the dimensions 30"W x 16"L x 15.3"H

what do you guys think?
got any better ideas?

I'm going to make a machinist chest. I bought the plans for a Hetzel machinist chest for about $15 online. Mine will be for knife storage, watch storage, keepsake area, a few precision tools and my water stones. Basically a man's chest. That sounds like something you're looking for. The plans are very nice and look fairily easy for anyone with a modicum of woodworking experience.

The drawers on the wooden chests don't slide out as far as the drawers with the full slide extensions.

See if you can build that into your chest so they don't droop when you have them loaded and all the way out
