Knife storage dreams

It was before Christmas, and all thru the house.........no that was another story, it was actually in Lowe's. There in Lowe's was this monster tool chest on sale with all kinds of drawers and some doors and it all locked up in some way or another. I stood in front giving it a real going over, the four digit price tag was just glanced at, lest I run away quickly.

Now picture me at home looking at my small 8 gun safe and wishing for more semi-secure storage. Lets be honest give me a few minutes and a 2lb hammer, a crow bar and a decent battery drill and I could been in that fancy tool chest. Maybe 10 minutes more and most likely in my cheap gun safe too.

Has anyone ever thought of, seen or discussed with manufactors representative of someone making a "KNIFE' safe. I picture my little safe with one shelf and then a stack of built in metal drawers which would be felt lined and could be even be subdivided down to the 300 level. Anyone ever physically touched one. Maybe BCCI could sponsor one........I might get one if that would happen.

Three issues exist here 1) convience for owner, heck you pull out a drawer and fondle a knife without troubles. 2) Family security and organization. No kids here to worry about but I do have domestic glances when I have knife sfuff out in manner that is not becoming.....you wonder if your prize knife is a two rivet or three and you just open , pull and look.......3) Knife security....a decent gauge steel, a decent dial lock and you at least make it hard for thievery. You have alarm systems, bad dogs, watchfull neighbors and mean reputation but nothing beats hardened steel to beat worry. I have some out in a display case I can turn from here and look at but nothing really rare or that couldn't be replaced. And a watchful and mean neighbor but he has to sleep sometime.

Now some folks with only a half-dozen knives won't know what I am talking about but you get up in the tacklebox, tool box or old jewelery box size collection or some of your knives have 3 digit values and you will understand what I am talking about.

So anyone ever seen a "KNIFE" safe. Or will a tool chest be modified in my dreams.

Craftsman and others makes some good stackable, attractive, locking, heavy metal tool boxes that I've seen guys use as knife safes . Which work very well . Thievies would not take the time to open the boxes at your home unless its bolted to the floor . They'd just wheel or carry the boxes to their pickup, throw them in and be gone . Then at their place they have all the time in the world to tear into the boxes . DM

Look at Liberty or National gun safes. National may have been picked up by Liberty.

They make a large one with adjustable shelves. Am sure they could modify one to your specs.

I looked long and hard at them before I bought one. Yeah,,very expensive, but in the long run, well worth it. Get a big one with fire rating to start with. Won't have to re-do later on as you add more knives and guns.

At 1500 pounds empty, no one is going to run off with it.

I've been looking for something like these blue print storage cabinets at local business auctions,

One company I worked for had them in wood and metal and they locked with a steel bar or bar and padlocks down the front. Was thinking about one for handgun storage but they would work even better for knives.

These are pretty spendy versions but they do look nice and show the design in wood vis metal.

Badhammer, both are good ideas but the wooden one is really good looking. Better than the cardboard boxes I have now.

Thanks for replies so far. I have a 15.5 inside width, non fire safe, what I call Medium level Walmart.... It might be that some of the Craftsman tool bin side add on units would fit inside my safe, will figure it out. Thanks for the replies so far. If you have enough 'stuff' you want to protect I guess number one issue is fire safe or non fire safe. Looks like anything over one hour protection is over 1,000. 300

It's a dilema, for sure. I found that a middle section of Craftsman tool tower just fits between the plastic shelves where I display my knives. Has four shallow drawers. Works great, but like someone said, not secure as a thief will just take the whole box. But, I have more knives just sitting on the other shelves, unprotected. I did splurge on a regulation gun safe last year, but it's full. My old, non fireproof, Walmart, corner style, metal cabinet with the pop machine key ended up full of reloading supplies and ammo. What's a guy to do? I have the other two parts of the Craftsman tool tower, but, alas, still has tools in it. I, too, get scowled at when I leave knife and gun stuff all over the house, so some system is needed--but then, part of the fun is "figgering things out" and having immediate access when the urge strikes me.

I do enjoy telling folks, just before they go into my Man Cave, "Be careful, everything in there will either stab ya, stick ya or shoot ya!!"

My wife bought me a stackable Sears tool box 2 years ago.You can lock it,is it bulletproof, probably not.I like it though,I lined every drawer with an anti moisture padding. It holds alot of knives, which is a big plus, and provides easy viewing.

craftsman is ok. but the KENNEDY machinist boxes are great. luv mine ! sure would like a gerstner though.

well i put my displays with my knifes in them on the walls of the hall...
i have good insurance so why worry..

but at the blade show is a fellow that makes a set of cases that
are glass topped drawers (6 i think) that pull out
there are many ways to store them..
but me i like looking at them not digging them out..

A small point to consider is storage for all the boxes/sheaths/paperwork you need to keep....You have to save all that stuff to get top$$$ if you ever sell or trade...Some display/shipping cases look cool.A real pro you can not stop, but you can slow down the punks/kids who drop in for a quickrip.

i had a cat once, (no i did not use him for a target - he was a lazy cat)
bought his litter in large square plastic buckets with easy snap open lids
i use them to store my fixed shaped knife boxes and sheaths in -
jest lable them with what knife they hand..
for the normal collapsible boxes i flatten them on the seams and
band them togeather and put in 5 gal buckets with lid
for sheaths i lable them as to knife they for and put in large baggies and
they also go in a 5 gal bucket..
NOTE: the food grade kind seal hermetically and dont let moisture in
have had none get that white mold you see on
stored paper or leather goods some times!
but on safe side
could put moisture adsorb and some fungicide with things

What I have learned so far.

Decide whether you want to survive a fire or will take your chances.
If you want one hour fire resistance then it will cost $1,000 for a gun safe that does that.
If you have nothing fixed yet you are better off. Tool boxes look more attractive then.
Depending on you crime situation, your site of storage, your domestic arrangements you may can find an industrial tool storage box that gives you several minutes of crimininal resistance. But if you are in house you may have to fix up comestic look to satisfy co-inhabitant. Check out Knaack Boxes Model 49.
Lots of drawer units that would work for knives are made for parts access and are plastic.
Nice drawer units that were made for tradesman vans, TV,Telephoe etc are well made and would fit in my non-fire safe but they cost $350. Weatherguard.com Model 8905
Craftsman has a add-on shelf unit that is smaller but I could fit in four in my safe but they cost $89 ea. Craftsman model 61917
I am also toying around with idea I would get a big/good Craftsman tool cart, take off wheels and build it into a wooden cabinet/desk of acceptable female design. Then erect my knife photo setup on top. I do not gain any securtiy increase, with key lock of metal tool cabinet and key lock of wooden door only deterents. It would not be mobile if I or you plan to move and I really don't have time to build the fancy cabinet tool chest cover. So will have to decide do I pay with time and effort, or pay with cash. I could sell two guns I never use......the search goes on, keeping the eyes open.

110,

Think about how often you will get in trays for knives VS messing with boxes......maybe make the box drawers UNDER the knife drawers it may require some bracing but........does that sound right? 300

It was a few years ago, and I don't know where prices have gone in that time, but I was looking at Gun-Safes in a high end gun/knife shop a while back.

Basically, the ones costing about $1500 - $2500 could be ordered with custom interiors with shelving etc. You could get one that could accomodate your guns AND knives. They specified how long they last in a fire but I don't recall the specifics.

Seems for utmost security and climate control that would be a good solution.
