Dave and all,

I think my original topic of discussion in this thread concerned storage, organization and safety, both fire and theft. Actually looking for the best compromise of those. It would be a wonderful world if we all felt secure having display cases on the wall and all our knives lined up in a row. In reality talking about your knives, showing them here on these forums, talking about where you live, even your hobbies is increasing your threat level from net predators, granted it would be a determined thief to search us out, but I just use it as an example....lets hope it never happens... that said I was hoping to stimulate ideas on storage and organization along with security. MY main goal was to possibly work something out to increase my ease of storage and individual knife retrieval. Something that I could easily look at every knife I own. To that end I have listened to others ideas and presented my own. Yes, as I said in the beginning I have a set of knives out on display. But someone will ask a question that requires me to search thru the trays. I wish it was all I had to do was walk over to the wall and look at the knife in question.
I feel that I have worked and spent on my collection enough that when I am not present I feel some ease knowing I have some security measures in place. I can then go about my way lighter of heart. It is winter time and a horse pasture is between me and a busy county road, one hot butt out the window of a car, and fire safety might be the top issue on my mind. I would also like better organization and intend to prefect my records of knives in-hand and sought. In that end something with nice easy pull out drawers feels like the solution. I bet folks who have talked securtiy here have knives out on display, "I am a guessing." 300

Well,

Even if we have a display discussion...I spent several hours on research and want to show the best knife safe on the net I could find so far. For the man about town who has the means to store and protect his knives in the upmost manner. $2,200 worth anyway. 1 hour fire rating.

No I am not a man about town.

Interesting chest of drawers in a safe. I would think you could do this yourself with a home closet lined with steel plate and a security door and a chest of drawers.

I like the looks of all those drawers!!!! But I don't have room for another one..

We did like you are doing when we decided we wanted a gun safe, looked and looked and then looked some more.

The deciding factor is when I asked a cousin if I could look inside of his. He was a bit embarrassed, but showed us anyway. It was so crammed full of stuff that we couldn't even have imagined someone putting those things in one.

And could see that we would need room in one to grow.

So we treated it like an investment that will out live us and probably our kids and their kids.

Just be sure and leave a shelf or drawer for your wife.;)

As a funny,,I canceled my safe deposit box at the bank. I calculated that savings would pay for the safe in something like 66 years..:rolleyes::D

For extra fire protection for jewelry and documents, I picked up some of those thick plastic fire box safe things that sit nicely on the shelves in the safe. The larger one lays down and the lid will drop down and the file folder size documents are easily accessible.

In the old house, we evolved to a stack washer/dryer and an upright freezer (needed new ones at the time anyway) that made room in the utility for the safe.

So in addition to the guns, knives, and jewelry, there are wills, car titles, birth certificates, house documents, minimal income tax records, and things I have probably forgotten.

Our experience was kind of a "do it right the first time" thing. In out research, we saw a lot of folks buy less and then have to upgrade later on.

Like guns and knives, is all subjective to your needs/wants so just thought I would toss out our experience.

Oh, I also had a digital pushbutton dial installed. So much easier to access than the combination dial one.

$2200 may seem high right now, but a few years down the road, it will have been a good investment.

Dave, this brings to mind a friend of my Dad. Started up a small business that did well, and he got off into collecting guns. Had a hall closet approximately 3 foot square that was so full of long guns standing up in there, that he almost couldn't close the door.

And had the top shelf full of ammo for each one.

Loved showing them off and would loan some out to friends. I guess after a couple of years people talked and he came home one day and they were all gone. Closet was empty. Never recovered any. :o

Dave, unless someone has some additional info to add I believe we have all benefited and that is the purpose of a good thread that has about run its course. Now I think I watch for a 20% off craftsman tool chest sale.....Or I find a good price on sheet aluminum and buy a big box of pop rivets and some saber saw metal blades.....
