Hey,
I live near Syracuse New York, I was wondering if any forum members live around here and if so do you know if there are any good knife stores in the area? The only "good" one I know of is Bass Pro Shops in Auburn, but as I have a lot of free time I like to explore my options. Thanks!

P.S. Any know of any knife, gun, or general sportsmen shows in the area coming up?

Thanks,
Matt

Well I guess I'll just run to Bass Pro Shops tomorrow, maybe they got something new in...

Best I have seen is in Long Lake, New York. The owner of the Mobil station and convenience store is interested in knives and had a pretty good selection of production knives. Gander Mountain has a fairly good selection. Unfortunately, I do not know of any specialty knife shops in Central New York. I have even thought of starting one, but thought it would be difficult to compete with sellers on the net. Too bad Camillus does not have a factory store. Twenty years ago I was in the Camillus factory offices to make a proposal for professional services, and in walking around we saw lots of examples of products made over the years in cases on the walls.

There's 2 places in Camillus that sell their knives... One is a gas station on Main, which has the smallest ever selection that are hard to find, hard to find as in they're in a frame case up behind the counter far up on the wall. The other place which I haven't explored is a gift shop that looks like it sells mainly dolls and crap, didn't check it out after I saw what the gas station had to offer. Anyways, I guess Bass Pro Shops is the only place around here. They have Benchmade, Ka-Bar, Case, Buck, Gerber, and some others, actually it's pretty nice. Dicks Sporting Goods has a few also but they really suck. Dicks has some Buck and Gerber, along with countless Cheapo knives and the sales people really don't give a damn about taking the time to let you see them, instead they rather walk around pointlessly and gab with eachother.

Off-topic, but...

Hey Ronsec - at least you still live where one can find spiedies in a local hole-in-the-wall (Sharkey's, etc. ) :D :D

I do miss those things.. :D

Yes, I do like my spiedies! Did you grow up in the Triple Cities? I'm in Endicott. :)

Yes, I grew up in Vestal - class of 1980...

Haven't been back to the area for a couple years now; most of the family now lives elsewhere. Some fond memories, though - a lot more elbow room than where I live now (but, gotta live where the employment opportunities are for what I do).

Are we anywhere close in age? Just wondering if we actually knew each other in a previous "lifetime"

Ever been to Sharkey's in Binghamton? I presume they're still there. And I would certainly assume Lupo's in Endwell continues to thrive :D

Send me an email or PM - you may know my daughter's inlaws. This way we won't bore the "spiedi challenged" among us ! :D

You're right & I'm sorry. We'll take it to PM or Email from now on. Take a ride down here when the weather warms up, and I'll BBQ spiedies for us to make it up to you ! :D

YO---
Representing Rochester, I can say we don't have too much to offer in upstate. The best I can find is at the gun shows every few months. There is one coming up the first weekend in April (rochester Dome center in Henrietta). I've been to the bass pro shop, not bad considering what we have. I'll go with the internet though, nothing like shopping from the comfort of home.

Any gun shows in Syracuse? How would I find out (as in, were are they held?). As we have no chance of a knife show I guess I'll have to settle for the gun shows.

I like shopping online as much as the next person but you just can't beat being able to handle the knife you want before you lay down the cash. I will buy a newspaper tomorrow and check for gun shows in the area, might get lucky. If I do find one I'll post it here. They usually hold the shows at the State Fairgounds or maybe the Oncenter?

I grew up in Elmira, NY and I can say that as far as a REAL cutlery shop goes, you are in a twilight zone. For a state that has so much history, and still has some major manufacturers in it, there are very few good places to go handle and select a wide variety of knives. You have to hunt the smaller gunshops, hardware stores, and go to gunshows. There are deals out there, some places can surprise you, but you need to be persistant and be prepared to pay MSRP if you find something you want. I've looked all over during my travels and am still amazed that I can find SAKs, Gerbers, and Bucks made thousands of miles away, but have to hunt like a beagle to find a selection of Case or Camillus knives that are made only a few hours away in either direction. Queen knives are made about 2 hrs west of me and I've never even seen a display :grumpy: , if it weren't for the internet, I'd probably be SOL in terms of having a diverse selection of knives I like.

Matt, my friend, you're in luck. You're mere minutes away from the world headquarters of The Martialist -- and a brief trip up Route 81 away from Gander Mountain, which has more retail space than me. ;)

Take Route 81 to Exit 30, the exit you'd take to go to Cracker Barrel. Go straight through the light at the bottom of the exit. Gander Mountain is ahead on the right, next to the aforementioned "restaurant," and has a nice selection of knives, accessories, airsoft pistols, hunting gear, some survival stuff... basically it's the coolest store ever.

Oh, and there is a gun show at the New York State Faigrounds twice a year. The Spring one should be coming up pretty soon, if I remember correctly.

Oh, and as far as other places to buy knives in Syracuse:

1. There's a gun store on Route 5 headed towards Auburn, Camillus Gun and Bait (I think that's the name) that has a limited selection.

2. You can visit the Camillus facility in Camillus, but they won't actually sell you anything. I've called and they referred me to Will Fennel, who is not trapped here with us in the Blighted North that is Syracuse. Camillus does, however, always have a table at the Syracuse Gun Show.

3. There is Oriental City in Shoppingtown Mall, former home of the late and unlamented Cutlery World. Oriental City keeps moving around the mall to bigger and bigger space, so I guess it must be doing okay. They charge more or less full retail and most of their selection is Chinese imports. If you want an Mtech kerambit or some hideous fantasy monstrosity from Frost Cutlery, they're the people to see. They also carry a limited selection of martial arts items.

4. The Syracuse Wing Chun Academy, 3056 Burnet Ave (near where Burnet meets Thompson -- take 690 to the Thompson Road exit and hook up to Burnet(t) going back into the city) has a selection of martial arts equipment and is a CAS Iberia/Hanwei dealer -- the only one you're likely to find in the city. Tell Sifu Iglesias I sent you. He can get you anything you need from among their offerings. I bought my Hanwei Practical Katana from him.

5. Ra-Lin Discount on Burnet sells firearms and knives. It's been a while since I took a look at their selection, so I can't vouch for what's there, but at last count they still sold both. Don't expect any Earth-shattering bargains there, though.

6. The dollar store on Erie Blvd. carries some cheap knives.

7. Dicks Sporting Goods in Shoppingtown Mall has a limited selection of cutlery and firearms.

Hey Phil,
Thanks for the reply! I checked and it's only a 22 mile drive if I skip route 81, if not it's 30. I'm going to take a trip up there in the morning and see what this place has to offer.

:D :D :D
