Knife stores in Central New York?

Holy crap Phil, thanks for the even more detailed reply!

Have you ever been to Bass Pro Shops in Auburn, they're not all that bad!

I've been to Ra-Lin with my father years ago, but haven't been back since.

Dick's, well... I got a problem with Dick! I could get into why, but that would mean a lot of typing that I'm not up to :D

There used to be a cutlery specific store south of the Rochester airport--I'm thinking Scottsville, perhaps--that had odd hours and mostly low end factory stuff. I stopped there twice and both times I missed their working hours, but it might be worth a look in the yeller pages.

For a short while there was a good cutlery store off Sheridan in the Buffalo area but I'm pretty sure they're gone, too.

Gander Mountain is great, there is also one in Rochester and Buffalo(Tonawanda) now too, but it may be worth the hike to go to the Cabelas store in Hamburg PA. Very scenic trip down 81 and then 61.... ;)

I can't comment on the Basspro store in Auburn, but the one I was at in Baltimore even carried Knives of Alaska products--unusual stuff and worth a look.

FWIW I can't think of any good knife specific places in Albany, just a gun store or two, but there used to be a SAK store in Westchester and one in central CT.

JT's in Port Jervis is excellent, stocking true customs and Randalls and such, and a nice army-navy store to boot. I realize I'm stretching the definition if central NY, though....

Being a guy from Jersey I'm gonna guess you do a lot of traveling. I live in the Buffalo area and the name of the store JohnG is referring to was Knife Werx. Unfortunately he closed a while ago, but it was a nice little store. Carried mostly Spydies, and Benchmades and the owner knew his stuff when it came to a good knife. His prices were a little high but still didn't stop me from supporting a small local business owner.

The only places I know to buy from now (that have a decent selection) would be Gander Mountain and the Buffalo Gun Center. I have a Dick's Sporting Goods around the corner from me but they don't have a great selection at all.

Well,If you don't mind a 4 hour drive from Syracuse, you can visit the shop below.I have been there a few times to buy Randall knives sold at about Randall Catalog prices. They have a huge selection of high end productions and custom knives folders/fixed blades to say the least. This is the closest you will be to the number of knives under one roof besides a full blown knife show. You would not be disappointed after taking the trip. They even sell/buy/trade previously owned knives.Prices were very reasonable. They had hundreds of knives in stock. When I went last trip, they had no less than about 50 Randalls.A huge display of custom tactical folders etc.

Dealer Name: Cubetas Field & Stream

I hope this isn't too off topic but I have a 2 part question. There is a custom knife maker in NY whose webpage I was at a few days ago but I cannot remember his name for the life of me. It was like Desperino...something like that. It looked like he almost exclusively made different kinds of Kerambits. If anyone knows his name/website I would really appreciate it. The second part of the question would be, has anyone ever handled his knives and if so how are they? Thanks in advance for any help.

Damn I knew I was close =p. Thanks for the link bud, I did tons of searches to try and find it and came up with nada. Do you know anything about his blades? I don't see them mentioned a whole lot on here, but they do look nice. Thanks!

is JT's Custom Knives near you....... in Port Jervis?

Port Jervis is about 3 hours away from Me.. A bit far, but if I get desperate enough..

Well,I've been to Joe's (JT's) knife shop several times as well, but I'm alot closer than you are.I would say if your going to make a trip this far down,it would be worth your while to go to Cubetas like I recommended instead for an extra hour of travel.
I like JT's knife shop, and Joe is a good guy,but his selection is very small to say the least. In fact there is more Army and Navy stuff than knives. The store is very, very small.Only a few customs,I've never seen Randalls actually for sale there. He has a selection of a few brand production knives, but nothing very impressive and usually at pretty close to retail.

You can come down the NYS Thru-way and go towards the Mass Pike to exit on to the Taconic State parkway down to I-84 East towards CT and be down at Cubeta's in no time.

Well In about 2 or 3 weeks I'll probably be in Albany, so that's only about 2 hours away from Middlefield... I'll have to check it out :D

Actually maybe I can just visit both stores... A big ass round trip.

It will never happen, but sounds fun.

Tombstone, thanks for the mention of Cubeta's. I've seen them mentioned here before and I'm kicking myself as I was maybe a half hour from there just last week. It sounds like a must-stop kind of place.

Mere Mortal, my job has me traveling all over NY, NJ and CT, and I had an appointment scheduled in Middletown NY 2 weeks ago but cancelled it due to expected bad weather. I would have stopped in JT's on my way home. Hadn't been there in over a year but when I first stopped there maybe three years ago they had a Randall or two, if my memory is correct, and some Meerdink customs, too, but that was some time ago. PJ is a neat little town, in any case. I live off Rte 206 in NJ so I can take a scenic route back from there.

It's waaaay out of the area, but there's a place called Country Knives out in PA Dutch country, kinda near Lancaster, that was the biggest all-knife store I've seen so far (haven't been to Smoky Mountain in TN, though). Great place for higher end production stuff, but we've all gotten used to not paying anything close to list any more, so it seems pricey. I mention it because you never know where you end up when you're on a trip, right? ;)

And if we're being completists, Fred Eisen Leather in New Hope PA has some high end production and custum stuff. I was there a month or two ago and while the collection for sale was small it was choice stuff. (I found it by accident looking for David Boye stuff on the web). He also makes all sorts of leather goods. New Hope is a fun town to just walk around if you ever get the chance.

North Jersey has Campmor, but also Ramsey Outdoor. The store in Ramsey(not Paramus), on 17 south, has a pretty good collection of stuff and some custom work by a guy whose name I can't remember. They also have a great gun and hunting store there.

Off Rte 22 in NJ is Ray's, a police and outdoor store, and they carry a good selection of Benchmade and other neat stuff (caveat in that I haven't been there in a year or so).

Ya there was a store or two mentioned in Dutch Country (Intercourse Knives?) etc. that sounded good, but since it actually was farther to travel there than Cubeta's,CT for me, I always opt for Cubeta's due to their huge selection.JT"s shop has a few Randalls for display, but he will not sell them.In fact he has a Springfield Randall in his collection. He has a few nice Meerdinks, but the customs are very limited as is the productions. He has only a few very small display cases of knives as you know. It's a good place to hit if your in the area, but not a special 3-4 hour trip in my opinion. If your anywhere CT on a business trip, hit Cubetas for sure.
