What are some good knife stores in the No. Virginia / DC / Maryland area? I'm going to visit family there this summer. I know there's a chain of Chesapeake Knife and Cutlery or something like that in the malls of VA. Any other good stores?

You probably wouldn't want to go to Chesapeake Knife and Tool for your... well knives and tools. Last time I checked in Towson Mall, MD, most of their knives were being sold at or near MSRP, which is ridiculous compared to prices you can find online. Not much selection either, so unless you need a quick and nasty knife fix, stay outta there :)

I'm sure there's other small stores around, but unfortunately I don't know where they are. Being a student without a car really, really sucks. D.C. might have some stores, but I've heard you shouldn't have more than a 3" folder down there. Not really a blade-friendly city.

I know of no knife stores in DC that sell anything that you might be interested in. What you can buy is POS knives at Sunny's Surplus, that sort of thing. Once, there was a store that sold Randalls and such but that was back in the 1960s.

In Northern Virginia, you have Chesapeake Knife & Tool and the Remington stores in the malls. You can pretty much forget the Remington stores, as they have cut their knife selections way, way back to almost nothing. It's sad, as they used to have nice things at the one at Ballston. The CK&T stores tend to vary wildly with their staff. Some can be fun to visit and others can be a real pain, it all depends upon the personalities of the people who work there. If they are knife enthusiasts, the visit can be fun, but if they are the usual paid employees putting in time, forget it.

There is a Spyderco dealer down in Fredericksburg, VA, about 45 miles south of Washington, down I-95 towards Richmond. I forget the name, but you can find it on the Spydie website. They sell other knives as well and the couple of times that I have been in there, it was a fun visit. You can also visit the Fredericksbutg and Chancellorsville Civil War Battlefields, if that interests you. They are quite interesting, and Princess Caroline Street in downtown Fredericksburg is a nice place to visit for a day's browsing and shopping. Try out Goolrick's Drug Store, they have a soda fountain just like I remember hanging out at in the mid-1950s, except that they don't have a revolving stand of comic books.

Remington doesn't have much but has good prices on what they do. Chesapeake Knife and Tool does not sell at MSRP. They sell far, far above it.

I'm not too sure if Richmond is too far south for you, but there is a sporting goods store called Green Top on US Highway 1 in Ashland, just north of Richmond. They have a nice selection of Buck, Spyderco, SOG, Browning and Benchmade. They also have plenty of other neat outdoors gear, fishing equipment and guns.

Lots of great Civil War sites there, too. You'd be only a few yards from Yellow Tavern, and a few miles from the Museum of the Confederacy, Cold Harbor, and the Richmond Battlefield sites.

I have not been back to the DC/NVa area in about 6 or so years, but the only knife store I remember is Chesapeake Knife.. and as stated here they are way to proud of their merchandise. I seem to remember there being several surplus stores in the Georgetown area with decent selections of used knives... but thats about it. Be carefull about what you carry in the area as well... the sheeple population is through the roof...

As everyone mentioned, there's CKT at just about every mall in the region. Last few times I checked, the surplus stores had lots of Chinese crap. Not worth the trouble IMO. Galyans off of I66 in Fairfax has a decent selection. Actually, their knife selection is on par with CKT (talking quality, not quantity). The gunshops have a few knives, but they're priced too high as well.

I own a knife store at Apple Blossom Mall in Winchester, VA (I 81). I also own one in Harrisonburg, VA, but that is probably a bit too far south for you.

The stores are mostly knives and knife related items, with some gift items thrown in to match the store-front theme (a castle). We carry most of the major brands of production knives. While, the prices are mostly MSR, we offer a 20% discount to forum members. We will also ship and do special orders. We are also the only stores in the area to offer custom knives.

If you email me, I can give you directions. It is always good to meet other forum members.

Thanks, Pendentive. I had no idea that the KnifeCenter was in Maryland.

And Pam, I'm going to email you for those directions to your store. I've recently been bit by the customs bug and would love to check out the ones available at your store.

Alchemy - I'll be making a trip your direction in a few weeks. I'll be sure to stop by and say hello. (and hopefully make a purchase.:) )

Alchemy Knives is a cool shop. Can't wait for the Hagerstown, MD location.

Try Product World USA in Arlington, VA. They have a wide variety and the prices are actually pretty good.

Nova Armament in Alexandria, VA. They don't have a super wide selection, but if you like Benchmade, Emerson, and especially Medford knife and tool, they'll be your shop. They let me play with just about every knife they had for as long as I wanted before I settled on two Medfords. Great guys, extremely friendly. And on the plus side if you're a VA resident, they sell guns as well.

Knifecenter isn't in Maryland. They moved to Virginia, just south of Fredericksburg last year.

Resurrected thread, from 2002! Fun to see how far back some of the guys go -- I remember Pendentive. :)

Edgeworks knife store is in downtown Fredrick, MD on N. Market & E 2nd Street. They have a large selection of production knives from a side range I'd companies. They also have custom knives. I'm not sure if they're selling at or below MSRP.
