I may be flying to Detroit this weekend to buy a motorcycle and ride it back to Virginny. Since the flight will render me knifeless, I thought I'd look for a quality knife store (a'la New Grahams) in the Detroit vicinity to stop in and buy a new pocketknife.

Thanks in advance for recommendations,
Chris

Chris - I ONLY wish there something like New Graham's here in metro Detroit. If there is I'm not aware of it - the really good places have closed due to retirement etc.

Hey Chris....

You may want to re-consider this weekend or at least check the long range forecast.. Suppose to snow tomorrow....

As for knife stores..
Nothing in just knives,, However,, there are a couple of gun shops that have an Excellent selection of knives..

A little light on Spyderco,, however heavy on Benchmade and CRKT...

The gun shop is called Target Shooting sports on Woodward,, somewhere around the 12-15 mile road North..
Big silver building

I'm from Canada,, however it is on my General route and stop in from time to time..
Last time I was there about two weeks ago they had a Real nice selection of BM's

BTW.. Joes Army Navy in that same stretch North,, has a kinda so so selection,,maybe worth dropping in while you are there..(Some spyderco, Kershaw ect)

The other store called Double Action is on 14 mile and Dequinder S, about 1/4 mile down back towards Detroit (Orange building, sign out front, kind of hidden)

Have fun,, and drive careful...

Gibbs, New Graham is a great place, and not just for knives. The diner serves up pretty decent grub, and all the two-lane roads in the area are fabulous for motorcycling.

Eric, Thanks for the pointers. I'm watching the weather. As long as it stays above freezing during the day on Saturday and Sunday, and doesn't rain or snow too much, I think I'll be able to pull it off. I have an electric jacket liner that keeps me warm when T>32F and keeps me alive when T>20F or so. This bike doesn't have much in the way of a faring though, so it'll be an adventure for sure.

Like Eric said, you are picking a bad weekend for a bike ride, it is snowing as we speak, and this weekend is supposed to suck.

There are no decent knife stores in the D, there is one in Lansing I went to once, but the prices of a B&M store will shock you if youa re used to internet shopping.

There used to be a great knife shop on Andersonville Road but it is closed now.

If you are looking for knives, as Eric wrote, gun stores often carry some decent knives, as do the sporting good stores like Gander Mountain, Bass Pro Shop, Dicks, Galyans, Cabbellas (in Dundee which is on your way home assuming you are taking 75 to KY and cutting over).

Waht kind of Bike are you picking up?

No specific knife stores, but you could stop at Cabelas. Their knife selection isn't great, but they have a few interesting pieces. Great antique and high end gun collection too.

~By the way, I'm sure you already have a route planned, if you don't send me an email. It only takes about 7.5" hours from the Toledo area to Blacksburg.

Chris,
I live about 25 mi south of Detroit on a little island, Grosse Ile. There is absolutely nothing here. And the so called "knife shows" are total junk.
You'd be much better off eith one of the many reputible dealers on-line.
Just my opinion.

Thanks for all the comments. Still watching the weather.
Assuming all goes well, I'll be picking up this bike:

At the SE corner of Ford and Telegraph there is an "army surplus" store. I think the name is Harry's. They have a large selection of knives and other such products. I don't know if Balisongs are legal in your state, but they some a few cheaps as well as the Spyderfly and some BM's the last time I was there. The price is not really competitive with internet.

Weel, I ended up having to check my luggage, so I stashed a knife (Delica) in there along with my Schrade multitool. Bought the bike and rode 'er home to Blacksburg. About 600 miles, mostly two-lane. Good time. No knife-shopping after all, though.

Thanks,
Chrish
