Knife suggestion for sister...

I'd agree look at the Fallkniven WM1..., great knife for the $$$..., if the size doesn't cuase legal issues.

Dare I say a good heavy duty kitchen knife:). They can handle most camp knife chores, and I doubt it would cause any legal problems.

HTH:D:).

Thanks again for all the new replies.
Some great suggestions and comments!

Yes, I will have to teach her how to use a sharpening stone/hone of some kind...I have several and will let her decide which one she will be more comfortable using. Yes, I will try to make sure that she practices enough to get a working edge on a blade.

The Buck Vanguard is a good one...I'll have to look into it. I'll let her handle some of my other blades and see what she prefers in terms of ergonomics.

Medic1210, I'm still not decided about the serrations...maybe partial serrations but I hear what you're saying. Good points.

I just picked up a SAK Huntsman Plus and I'm sure she'll like it. She's already open to the idea of a fixed blade so it's just a matter of finding one that she likes.

MelancholyMutt, I hear what you're saying about my sister travelling alone in Europe but hey, I can't chain her to a fence so I'll just have to do my best to prepare her. She's always been the "convicted" type so once she's set on doing something, she'll do it. So no sense trying to convince her otherwise. I'm happy enough that she's willing to take a knife or two.

Thanks again for all the responses. Keep them coming cuz she's isn't leaving until March! :)

I would think that the Fallkniven is kinda good...VG-10 isn't that hard to sharpen...maybe you could use a DMT diafold which is kinda easy to carry around and it does have 2 grits...fine and extra fine...

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Benchmade Griptilian yet. It's under $100, very grippy, blade length falls between 3.5 and 5 inches, and the steel's pretty good from what I hear.
